@WindyCityWxMan I time it at about a quarter or a second (I slowed the video down), so what's that, maybe about 75-80 Metres (so about 250ft). Yeah, that'd put a spring in your step if you were outside for sure.

One of the biggest dangers of storm chasing isn’t the tornado Lightning. Had the GoPro mounted to the hood of the truck. We stayed inside it as the lightning bolts were incredible and dropping everywhere Volume up for this and count the seconds between the lightning flash and thunder

@publicpolicyman I wonder how much mechanics make from this every year. It seems arbitrarily daft given that if you can show you've spent 1200 or something trying to fix a failure, that you can just apply for a dispensation. Like, really, what is the point.

COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME & MONEY: I hope President Trump cancels northern Illinois emission testing which costs a billion dollars a year. 97% of the cars pass so it is a complete waste of time & money for Illinois drivers. There is no measurement if this improves quality of life or less emissions.

Guys. I’m going to close my @TMobile account after 25 years because they has added a new policy that if you use your number for travel and it’s uses excessive data roaming EVEN if you paid $50 Extra dollars per month for extra International data roaming. They turn off your ability to use data. Question: What company am I switching to? Who has the best international travel data plans in the USA? I’m leaving them behind. Their customer service was like “Too bad. We don’t care.”

@jessewisener @heynavtoor Get a smart plug and create a rule (maybe use ITTT.com) that switches the charger off at 100% and back on again at 10% battery life.

@heynavtoor Any ideas on how to keep the battery from exploding from being plugged in all the time? I know it's unlikely, but still a real threat.

You have an old Android phone in a drawer right now. Collecting dust. Worth nothing. Someone built a script that turns it into a full Linux desktop. Or a smart home server. Or a development machine. For free. It's called linux-android. One script. No root required. No flashing. No risk of bricking your device. Run it in Termux and your old phone becomes a Linux computer. Here's what it installs: → Full Linux desktop. XFCE4, LXQt, or MATE. Real windowed desktop on your phone. Connect a monitor and keyboard via USB and it looks like a PC. → Smart home server. Home Assistant runs on your phone. Control your WiFi lights, plugs, and smart devices from any browser on your network. No cloud needed. → GPU acceleration. Snapdragon phones get near-native GPU performance through Turnip Vulkan drivers. Mali GPUs use software fallback. → SSH server. Access your phone from any computer on your WiFi. Full terminal. Transfer files. Write code. All from your laptop keyboard. → Wine support. Run basic Windows applications on your Android phone through Box64 translation. → Audio support. PulseAudio configured automatically. → Works on any Android phone with Termux support. Here's the wildest part: A Raspberry Pi 4 costs $35 to $75. A used mini PC costs $100+. A VPS costs $5/month forever. That old phone in your drawer? It has a faster processor, more RAM, a built-in battery backup, WiFi, and a touchscreen. All for $0. You already own it. A Snapdragon 855 from a 2019 phone still outperforms most entry-level server chips. You're throwing away a computer every time you upgrade your phone. Not anymore. One command. One old phone. A full Linux machine. 100% Open Source. MIT License.

A little over a year ago I was grabbing breakfast in the cafeteria in the hospital where I work. They had put up a sign announcing a 50¢ surcharge on each egg you ordered. A woman standing next to me asked the chef what that was all about. I answered “oh, the bird flu is going around. We have an egg shortage right now. They’ve been talking about it on the news.” She replied “oh I don’t watch the news.” My internal reaction in that moment was a weird mix of anger at someone for being willfully ignorant and a determination to educate the entire state of Texas on why politics matter. I think about that conversation all the time. It has become relevant again, as I face questions in my job about why we haven’t received an order of plastic tubing and why the gloves we use all the time are back ordered. But my reaction is much different now. The world we live in requires constant information, constant vigilance and constant pressure on the people who are currently leading our country in matters that affect every aspect of our lives. But it shouldn’t. A perfect world is not where every single citizen is educated to the point of obsession with what our government is doing day in and day out. A perfect world is where we can live our lives in peace without ever thinking about our government at all. We need better leaders. It is on us to make it happen.

I give you the golden age of UK telly. There were quite a few blokes like this around when @StephenMoss_TV and I joined the BBC in 1982. And some similar women too to be fair. I well remember the truly formidable Biddy Baxter yelling on network talkback when I worked the live Look North gallery in Newcastle. God help you if you snipped ten seconds off the end of her Blue Peter!

Excellent but you can see it's two shots. James Burke still had to get the 2nd one exactly right with the rocket. Michael Buerk's link to camera as a train pulls in might be technically superior. Two of the cleverest links to camera by a pair of Burkes/Buerks! The irony!

Nature is beautiful but deadly. Lori Clark captured a stunning stovepipe tornado just north of her home in Rensselaer/Wheatfield, Indiana, illuminated by relentless lightning. Night tornadoes are nearly invisible and extremely dangerous. I hope everyone in that community is safe🙏🏼❤️ #indiana #inwx #tornado

What VLC does is called software amplification. Normally, your operating system limits volume to 100% to protect your ears and your speakers. That 100% isn’t the maximum sound the audio file could be pushed to, it’s just a safe ceiling set by the OS. VLC intentionally ignores that limit. When you slide the volume past 100% and up to 200%, VLC applies digital gain to the audio signal itself before it ever reaches your sound card. In simple terms, VLC takes the original sound waves from the video and makes them taller. Taller waves mean louder sound. This is especially useful for badly mixed videos, old recordings, or movies where dialogue is very quiet but explosions are loud. VLC boosts everything so you can actually hear what’s being said. The downside is that once you go past the natural range of the audio, quality starts to suffer. If the amplified signal exceeds what your speakers or headphones can reproduce, the sound clips. That’s when voices start sounding harsh, music loses detail, and you hear crackling. You’re not getting “cleaner” audio, just louder audio at the cost of accuracy.

i still don't understand how VLC media player takes volume to 200%
