Scrolling through my feed, there are two dominant ways I see traders actually using AI right now and neither of them is particularly flattering. Dashboarding There's something incredibly fulfilling about creating a system that's beautifully designed, tracking all the metrics anyone could ever want, P&L overlays, heat maps, sentiment feeds, whatever. It feels like real work. But for many people, it's just procrastination in a more expensive suit. The dashboard becomes the real project, and actual trading gets pushed to the side. Backtesting/Overfitting AI has made backtesting so accessible and so fast that people can torture historical data until it confesses to almost anything. And they do. I've literally watched people backtest a strategy, find that it underperforms on certain days of the week or certain hours, and simply remove those periods from the sample. The irony is that AI was supposed to remove human error from the process, but in practice it's often just amplifying the same old biases with a lot more computational power and a lot more speed behind them. Garbage in, garbage out; except now the garbage is better formatted and executes faster.

@Thisal92 @danukalive That may be true, but that doesn’t change the need for the price revision. Delaying the price revision just causes more losses. The actual issues related to the coal procurement should be done outside that process.

@katzsyntax @danukalive Yeah, raising prices is always easy for corruption and bad management. That's exactly what happens now with electricity being generated at night from diesel because of the coal problem. Now we have to pay all these extra costs, all because the government messed up.

The required fuel price revision has been done (with a delay), the QR system was implemented (also with a delay), and proper gas and electricity price revisions still need to be carried out. I think the government has to react to both internal and external factors much faster than this. There is an inherent slowness in the state, but it needs to be reduced. Whatever was said while in opposition can be ignored—what needs to be done now must be done. Socialist concepts are nice and attractive, but not practical for a country like us. We are a country with limited resources and no strong product base to offer. Therefore, we need to integrate properly with the global economy to run smoothly

Despite today’s 25% fuel hike, the govt still subsidises motorists by 100 rupees a litre on diesel and 20 rupees on petrol - at Rs 20 billion ($65 million) a month - just to keep prices at current levels, @NalindaJay says. Why should taxpayers be subsidising fuel-guzzling SUVs?

Sri Lanka has kept more than 250 sailors in protective custody since the early days of the war. Iran wants them back, but Sri Lanka is unsure what to do with them.

@lasiru @Oshila123 It's not really pocket money, imagine doing that for multiple chargers per outlet, at most Keells outlets? This was the plan and they stopped it when they realized how much it actually costs. This is aside from the additional electrical infra they need.

@Oshila123 The point of keels doing this was to sell the cars. Give assurance to the EV buyers that you can go anywhere. The installation cost of this is pocket money for keels. ~ 3 million.

Keells do have electric charging centers. Even though this was established months back, I haven't seen any vehicle plugged in to it. For the first time, I saw a vehicle and it's interesting. Good move. Ignore how it parked, BTW 😂😂

@nimilamalee That's actually the opposite of what we want. If businesses had daytime chargers for their staff and fleet, especially quick chargers, there would be less load at peak time.

Good thing people didn't mass-invest in charging stations for business.

This is Odd/Even queue system in Sri-Lanka is daft and unnecessary. It is a failure of enforcement, not a failure of the digital couple QR system. This again shows the absolute lack of even a minimal level of planning or understanding at GoSL. There are only 3 ways to ration: by price (first-come-first-served), by time (queues), or by coupon (guaranteed allocation). The whole point of moving to coupons is to ELIMINATE queues. You don't buy a movie ticket in advance and then queue at the counter again. The QR code IS a digital coupon. It guarantees you 15L at any shed, any time. From a brand/marketing perspective maybe "QR system" is not a great idea - people think its some technological solution. All it is is a coupon - which is verified digital at the point-of-sale by a Pump Attendant. Branding as 'digital coupon' - with a big bold 'ticket design' showing your 15L allocation on your phone might be much better. People forget/are confused - in 2022 - the huge 24hr queues were BEFORE the QR Code Digital Coupon was implemented. The queues vanished upon implementation. If GoSL actually enforced the coupon system at the pump — stopped over-dispensing, held attendants accountable — no one would need to queue. No queues = no need for odd/even. But enforcement is failing. Pumps over-dispense. Stations run dry. People see "No Fuel" signs and panic. So govt layers a queue-management system ON TOP of a coupon system — which, in the entire history of rationing, no one has ever done because it defeats the purpose. In the history of rationing — from wartime Britain to 2022 Sri Lanka — you do queues OR coupons. You don't do both. This just adds confusion and stress to already anxious families and workers who need to get to school and work. This is an enforcement problem dressed up as a distribution problem. Enforce the coupon system properly. That's it. Nothing more needed.

@sonaljay8 What do you attribute the cancellations to? Is it transit through the Middle East or that air tickets in general have become a lot more expensive?

It is now a double whammy for the tourism industry. Foreign booking cancellations are continuing to increase at an alarming rate; up to 30% for some properties for bookings until the end of April. Plus the fuel crisis means that the local market cuts down on travel too.
