@tomhfh It is indeed obscene, but it is not just the fault of the planning system. Even if it released more land, how confident are you that sufficient homes would be built. We need more players in the market

@tomhfh The major building firms have plenty of land with planning permission but are happy to drip feed it onto the market to maintain prices. It is not in their interest to build too many homes as that would reduce their margins. mpamag.com/uk/news/genera…

@tomhfh @AllisonPearson No one is forced to live in London. The "average first time buyer" deposit is not 125k.

@tomhfh The other criminal thing about this is that it's £125k of money sitting around doing nothing. You can't invest it because you're always think your purchase is just around the corner.

@tomhfh London prices are ridiculous. Elsewhere you can get entire houses for significantly less than than deposit.

@tomhfh Why is the economy not growing? Oh because everyone is either spending their money on rent or saving for a deposit... Until the government wakes up and starts building high density housing we are screwed

@tomhfh Where??? Here in Suffolk you could buy a two bedroom flat for £125,000. You don’t have to be able to buy a property in Central London..

@tomhfh Tom, trace it back this all started under Mrs Thatcher, right to buy, and failure to replace lost social housing.

@tomhfh We need socialism and a massive social house building programme. It’s disgusting what has happened to housing.

@tomhfh I managed to make a deposit of a little less than half than that 5 years ago and did that with a single income. However, frequently I come across people that are in low-salary jobs, but have been able to afford even higher priced homes. It's always via their parents.

@tomhfh A couple working in a supermarket have a combined income of around £40,000 a year, living with parents or renting a room, they could probably save £40,000 in 4 years, leaving a £120,000 mortgage to buy a 2 bed flat. Easily affordable, they just can’t do it in Kensington.

@tomhfh The solution is do what I and millions of others do and move to the area you can afford.
