Average first time buyer deposit. £125,000. Obscenity. Our planning system is beyond broken. And vested interests in all parties line up to defend it. Infuriating.

@tomhfh It is indeed obscene, but it is not just the fault of the planning system. Even if it released more land, how confident are you that sufficient homes would be built. We need more players in the market

@tomhfh The other criminal thing about this is that it's £125k of money sitting around doing nothing. You can't invest it because you're always think your purchase is just around the corner.

@tomhfh I managed to make a deposit of a little less than half than that 5 years ago and did that with a single income. However, frequently I come across people that are in low-salary jobs, but have been able to afford even higher priced homes. It's always via their parents.

@tomhfh A couple working in a supermarket have a combined income of around £40,000 a year, living with parents or renting a room, they could probably save £40,000 in 4 years, leaving a £120,000 mortgage to buy a 2 bed flat. Easily affordable, they just can’t do it in Kensington.
