Ashish, TJ and Ishaan played a key role in hiring, mentoring and inspiring me to become a better investor and partner to founders at Sequoia India. I'm grateful to have worked with you and am rooting for you to build a new age world class investment firm from India. Founders deserve it. @dvbydt @tejeshwi_sharma @Ishaanmittal2
Ashish Agrawal@dvbydt

After 13 years at @peakxvpartners / Sequoia Capital India, I have decided to take the entrepreneurial plunge. I am excited to be teaming up with longtime partners @Ishaanmittal2 and @tejeshwi_sharma to start a new venture capital firm. I am deeply grateful to all my partners - @sjs_day1, @mobhat , @gvravishankar, @RajanAnandan, @i_sakshichopra, and @rohitagar_wal - for a truly wonderful partnership. These years have shaped me not just as an investor, but also as a person. Today, the firm is stronger than ever - the next generation of investors, the operating leaders, and teams are exceptional. I thank all of them for their support over the years. It has also been an incredible privilege learning from Michael Moritz and Doug Leone, and the entire Sequoia leadership. Few institutions have refined the model for venture capital as thoughtfully as Sequoia, and it is an inspiration as we think about building our firm. The last few years have given me a ringside view of the best in entrepreneurship. Watching @_groww, one of the first investments I led, become the second most valued new-age public company in India has been extraordinary to witness first hand. Over time, I led ~20 others including Agrani Labs, @ambak_official, @Clarisights, @hellodezy, @Eduvanz_Finance, @gokwik, @LeapFinanceIn, @lightmetrics, @MSE_Exchange, @OnFinance_ai, @OrbitShift_AI, @OsfinAI, @PagarBook, @PayGlocalHQ, @getplumhq, @PristynC , @progcap, Stanza Living, @toddle_edu, @Wobot_ai, and @Zanskar Research. I am deeply thankful to all the founders who trusted me to be a part of their journeys. I am especially thrilled to be starting up with the two partners I have shared much of my life with. TJ and I have known each other for 13 years. Ishaan and I go back over 28 years - we were one year apart in middle school :) Together, we look forward to building a venture capital firm that supports the ambitions of the next generation of founders.

My mental model is that if you don’t win tech you don’t win. Because tech isn’t just electric cars and rocket ships, life extension and artificial intelligence. Tech is the money (crypto), the media (social), and especially the military (drones). China understands this.

For the first time in 6 years, we're stepping out of stealth mode! Last week, we (@ShopDeckd2c) announced our series B led by Bessemer with participation from Elevation Capital, Chiratae Ventures and Venture Highway.

Btw this is AI lip sync and voice clone… we have been building this model @invideoOfficial for many many months and it is now out of research… it’s not fine tuned… indian companies can build models.. we start the product work on this in a couple of weeks… hoping it is available in beta within 6 weeks… non-camera friendly folks, nothing holds you back if you have insights!

Waterloo is quite experimental and surprisingly young (65 years). Some longtime profs joke that "Waterloo is at risk of becoming a real university". A SUPER interesting case study on institution design. My thoughts: 1. Co-op - Experiential design can't be beat. A month into our first school term, our entire cohort was on the job hunt for the upcoming work term. It flip flops back and forth for 5 years (no summers off), graduating with 6 internships. People like @stephenkinsella taking this model, and applying it elsewhere! On school terms, the engineering coursework is overloaded to still hit the CEAB minimums around hours & technicality for becoming a certified engineer™️. A bit of a meat grinder but all in good fun 2. Culture - Extremely common and normal for people to be working on projects/hacking on a Friday night, on their own volition or otherwise. @socraticainfo being a outcome of that. We don't have active Greek life or super strong sports culture. Also not unusual for people to be working part/full time jobs on top of school 3. People count - People underestimate the sheer # of people enrolled. The off-stream system allows for capacity for 40,000 students across undergrad/grad. Across engineering + CS, that's ~15,000 students 4. Commercialization policies - Any IP from research done is owned by the individual. This means that profs can, and occasionally do, commercialize their work or advise for companies with relevant tech. A forcing function for more applied work 5. Ecosystem - There's a great ecosystem of alumni, like @jrodgers @thehongwei, that are actively super-boosting students where they can. Having a long history of adjacent tech companies also means you can sit in a @UWVelocity room, and the Blackberry engineer that popularized USB smartphone charging will sit and have a conversation with you.

Waterloo grads are unbelievably cracked software engineers. Has anyone written up an essay on what they’re doing there? Would be interested to read.

We are 20th on the list of 150 most used AI platforms in the world… my judgement is, it is fairly accurate. If we do a good job, we could be in top 10…

Been feeling super lucky lately - Very few GenAI cos in India with @InVideoOfficial kind of revenue and user scale, global product, enough capital, and profitability... If you have crossed a very high bar in life wrt engg, product, or product design - Feel free to ping me for roles. We consider this to be our craft and are committed to spending many years on the problem statement.. Also, product and product design roles are very lucrative and mentorship of @shreyas mid-career is the best thing that can happen to you. It is a lean and mean team of just 4 people combined. Not really hiring for a product role, but product design will get into active hiring vv soon.

The tech industry in the country desperately needs an overhaul of the engineering education infrastructure (AKA engineering colleges) to stay relevant globally. We just announced Scaler School of Technology, as our attempt to solve this massive issue. Let me explain, The Why? @AspiringMindsAM published a National Employability report in 2019, which found that >80% of people graduating with an engineering degree are unemployable because of a lack of skills that the industry seeks. One of the reasons why @scaler_official exists is the same; in most cases, traditional college education does not make its graduates capable enough to contribute to the industry in meaningful ways, thus leading to unemployment or underpaid support jobs in tech. As our contribution and effort to solve this problem, we are starting the first batch for Scaler School of Technology, which will be offering a fully residential, four-year undergraduate program in technology. This will have a limited intake of only 200 seats, with the residential campus in the heart of Bangalore. The four-year program is massively differentiated from traditional outdated engineering programs, with the goal of ensuring that students graduate with capabilities similar to those of a senior person in the industry. How will we deliver that? - 1.5 years of coursework, followed by a one-year internship in a top tech company, which is followed by specialization in a domain that is most sought after in the industry. For example, Algorithmic trading, Applied AI, designing high-scale systems, etc. - All classes are taught by industry experts who are practitioners themselves, as opposed to theoretical teaching by academicians. - Campus in the heart of Bangalore, to ensure deep exposure to tech giants and startups doing cutting-edge tech innovation. - Each student gets a personal 1:1 mentor throughout the program, who will be a senior tech leader from the industry. - Graduate with a UGC accredited BS and EU accredited MS through our partner universities, to which the students will be enrolled in parallel. This will ensure that you have access to all opportunities across the globe for immigration, higher studies, and employment. - Last but not least, no need to memorize chemistry formulas to study CS! You can do that later if you intend to work in the specialization of the application of computer science in the domain of pharma or the chemical industry! Link to the program: scaler.com/school-of-tech… Link to the introductory video: youtube.com/watch?v=B0HqF4… If you know someone who is finishing school (or has finished school recently) and aspires to make a strong career in the field of computer science, please do share! 🙏

Humbled that in just first week of announcement, @scaler_sst has organically received 1000+ applications already from potential students. While we’ve limited intake in the first year, it’s a clear indicator of demand for industry led education, that makes people employable. I hope more and more players in the ecosystem work towards building this.
