You go somewhere, take photographs of it, and leave unchanged. Wonder packaged and consumed rather than received. Netflix: facsimile of story as genuine initiation. Story used to do real work on you. Now it's ambient, endless, frictionless. The shape of narrative without the transformation. Music: facsimile of participation. Every culture before modernity sang together; around fires, in fields, in worship, in grief. Skill was irrelevant. The point was presence and contribution. Now music-making is reserved for the talented and the rest of us consume. We went from participants to audience. Video games: facsimile of meaningful agency in a world that has systematically removed it. The human animal was built to hunt, build, navigate, solve problems with immediate visible consequences. Modern life offers almost none of this. Work is abstract, impact is invisible, the environment doesn't respond to you.
