Norwood was in ROTC at @SIUC and was quarterback of the football team as the first #Black in that position. He graduated with a degree in chemistry in 1959. He flew B-52s in the @USAirForce through 1965. #BHM #blacksinaviation 🧵/2

William Norwood was the 1st #Black #pilot to fly for @United. He was inspiration to fly while in elementary school in Centralia, Ill., where his principal was a #pilot with the #TuskegeeAirmen during World War II. #BHM #blacksinaviation 🧵/1

In 1963, the @USSupremeCourt sided with Capt. Marlon Green, which paved the way for David Harris to become the first #Black #pilot for a major U.S. airline, @AmericanAir. #ContinentalAirlines did eventually hire Green and named a plane after him. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/7

Green’s lawyer then petitioned the @USSupremeCourt to hear the case and was granted a hearing. US Attorney General Robert Kennedy and other influential figures & organizations filed “friend of the court” briefs on Green’s behalf. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/6

#Pilot Marlon D. Green is known as the “Jackie Robinson of Aviation." He joined the @usairforce in 1948 to become an #aircraft mechanic. He was one of very few black airmen accepted into basic pilot training school in San Antonio in March 1950. #bhm #blacksinaviation 🧵/1

#Airlines didn’t hire many #Black flight attendants by #airlines until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed. Flight attendants fought for their rights as women and against age, race and marriage restrictions. #BHM #blacksinaviation 🧵/4

#TWA, facing nine complaints, #relented and hired Margaret Grant as its 1st #Black flight attendant in 1958. However Taylor was let go after 6 months because she married; the #airlines still discriminated against marriage back then. #BHM #blacksinaviation 🧵/3
