@CBHeresy I got into an argument with my communist HS history teacher when she claimed the a-bomb use on Japan was a "racist act". She didn't know Germany had a program which was the catalyst for the Manhattan Project nor did she know that the first bomb was ready only after VE day.

It's actually because most of them are stupid. When I was a young guy and went into teaching, I had this naive idea that I'd finally find a home among people who were skeptics and critical thinkers, like me. Instead, I just found myself awash in a sea of overeducated and highly credentialed morons.

Back in 2015, I interviewed at Republic Airways because I had my ATP written and they were hiring without the checkride. During the interview with the 20-something captain and HR lady, they asked about a stressful emergency. I told them the story of my flight lead dragging us through a thunderstorm and we were both struck by lightning. He was incapacitated briefly and I helped talk him down from the wing, earning a NAM. The young captain was awestruck. The HR lady? Launched into a commentary on how I could’ve handled it better. She was not a pilot. She was quite surprised when she offered me the job a few days later and I respectfully declined.

@RocketPulpHack problem is most people don't actually understand what it is, so their either view its as panacea for every problem (Its not), or this boogieman that can destroy matter, kill livestock, and make you sterile. In reality its a really good tool a handful of industrial cases.

There is nothing sadder than a Wehraboo/Weeaboo mix. How many hours of his life do you think he’s spent playing Hearts of Iron IV and watching anime? The ennui of the youth has them longing to be run over by a T-34 at Kursk, apparently. The best Allied weapons were the long ranged bomber, the aircraft carrier, the Liberty Ship, the C-47, and the 2.5 ton truck. The real superweapon was America’s ability to build these things at a rate that the Japs and the Nazis, combined, couldn’t hope to match.

@RocketPulpHack I'd also add the expansion of our industrial base to make those things. IBM went from type-writers to M1 Carbines, Ford was printing B-24's by the Hour, and even helped in P-51 production that escorted those bombers. IHC made up every 1 in 15 M1 Garands in service.

@MCCCANM A friend of mine is RNLAF and went through ENJJPT. It was hilarious some of the stuff he was discovering on his days off just going around Texas. One day, he'd send Pics of the T-6/T-38 stuff, the next, what BBQ joint they found or the one shop with horseback pizza delivery

The Euro Nato Joint Jet Pilot Training (ENJJPT) program is based at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX. It trains pilots from NATO countries from zero hours up until assignment to a fighter. I was lucky to be an instructor in the T-6. It’s full of various European students, Instructors & Commanders. While a Euro can’t be the Wing Commander, every leadership position below that is open to them. Ops Group Commanders were German & Italian while I was there, with Flight Commanders from all the countries. It was a lot of fun; each country put on a party for their national holiday. Anyway, the Euros LOVED to buy big trucks & go out to these kind of places. The instructors rented big houses & would road trip anytime they got the chance. As part of their curriculum, the students did a field trip to D.C., but they’d venture as far as they could go on the weekends, too. I recall an Italian Instructor telling me how amazed he was with a garbage disposal in the sink. When he went home, he took one with him & installed it himself…he thought he might be the only one in Italy with one. Getting an ENJJPT assignment was a big deal, and something they all competed for. Nights in Dallas, or a road trip to New Orleans was a huge deal. Cross Country training weekends meant expanding their horizons & seeing the whole country. They do love it here. I loved to see it, just as I’m excited to take my kids to Europe.
