Opposition leader Douglas Mwonzora has reported that violence broke out at an MDC Women's Assembly event in Bulawayo where members were pelted with stones. "Some hired thugs are currently attacking the MDC Women Assembly meeting at the Provincial Offices in Bulawayo. The women are commemorating the International women's day. The attackers made it clear that they are against the party stance on Amendment 3. "The police are standing and watching while thugs are pelting members of the MDC Women's Assembly with stones at a meeting in Bulawayo. The global political agreement (GPA) negotiations were very long and tedious. Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF considered the MDC-T and MDC-Ncube as so-called puppet Western funded political parties whose sole purpose was to remove Zanu-PF from power and effect regime change. His electoral defeat at the hands of Morgan Tsvangirai obviously pained him a lot and dented his pride and ego. That's why he proceeded with the farcical Presidential election runoff on June 27, 2008 after the withdrawal of Morgan Tsvangirai. All right-thinking people knew that June 27 was a huge farce. It was really pointless to proceed with a one man Presidential race in those circumstances. The negotiations lasted several months culminating in the consummation of the GPA in September 2008 at a lavish ceremony that was held at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC). To all intentions and purposes, the GPA was actually a very good deal for Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF because he retained the Presidency. He was supposed to share power with Morgan Tsvangirai as the Prime Minister. In reality, however, power was never shared since Robert Mugabe remained all powerful and domineering. Mugabe was a very sly and wily political operator. During the GNU era, he carefully studied Morgan Tsvangirai and he managed to run rings around him and thus, outwit him on the political chess board. Tsvangirai was supposed to chair the Council of Ministers and Mugabe was chairing Cabinet according to the GPA agreement. It was pretty obvious that real executive power lay in Cabinet and not in the Council of Ministers. In reality, therefore, Morgan Tsvangirai had very little executive power in the GNU. Real executive power was vested in Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF. There is a school of thought that propagates that it was Thabo Mbeki, another sly political operator, who styled the GPA in such a way that Mugabe and Zanu-PF would virtually be the real holders of executive power while the two MDC factions were mere junior partners ; political bridesmaids if one may say. It also appeared that Thabo Mbeki didn't have much respect for Morgan Tsvangirai. I'm absolutely convinced that Mbeki viewed and considered Tsvangirai to be a Western puppet. The 7th Parliament of Zimbabwe only became operational after the consummation of the GPA in September 2008. In between March and September 2008, there was very little, if any, Parliamentary activity. During that period, there was no Cabinet in place. A new Cabinet was only sworn into office after the signing of the GPA in September 2008. The GPA was a Thabo Mbeki production. It was mastered, engineered and produced by Thabo Mbeki. He made certain that Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF remained the senior partner in the new political set-up. There was absolutely no doubt about that. I didn't make into Cabinet when Morgan Tsvangirai nominated people into the new Cabinet in September 2008. I was selected to be the MDC-T chief whip in the Senate. Innocent Gonese was the chief whip in the National Assembly. I was also appointed chairman of the Parliamentary Legal Committee (PLC), a very powerful committee of Parliament that analyses and scrutinises all bills and statutory instruments before they are finally passed into law. Regarding extending the term of office of the President of Zimbabwe, this is what the Constitutional Court has already said: “ By way of contrast, the Constitution abounds with a myriad of provisions that unquestionably constitute specific term limit provisions within the parameters of s 328. First and foremost, there is s 95(2) which expressly stipulates that the term of office of the President is 5 years and coterminous with the life of Parliament… As is self-evident, the tenure of all of the aforementioned public offices is undoubtedly subject to a specific “term-limit provision” within the meaning of s 328(1). Consequently, an amendment to any such provision, the effect of which is to extend the length of time that a person may hold or occupy the public office in question, falls squarely within the ambit of s 328(7). 1. The CCC caucus meeting held on 12/02/2026 at Parliament discussed many issues, including the legislative agenda for the year. It is in this spirit that I attended. 2.Following the meeting, a statement was issued indicating broad support for the amendments, including Amendment No. 3, which seeks to extend the parliamentary and presidential term limits to 2030. 3.I want to categorically, without contradiction or ambiguity, make it clear that I, Richard Tsvangirayi, do not support this particular amendment, which seeks to extend the term limits by about two years. This position has been consistent. 4. I have always said: if your political party is providing public goods and services effectively, why should you be afraid to go to an election? If you have the support of the people, you should not fear the accountability that comes with an election. I have served the people of Norton with all my heart, despite operating in a very challenging political environment. That is why I can walk freely in the streets of Katanga, knowing I have wronged no one. I am not afraid of accountability. My conscience is clear. 5. As Members of Parliament, when we speak in Parliament, we do not communicate our personal views; we communicate the views of the sons and daughters who put their trust in us to represent them.
