Early 80s games had some of the best sound effects. The lasers, the explosions, and that "outer space" growling-noise... super eerie! Zaxxon (1982) was one of my favourites at the time. The 3D isometric graphics were the first of that kind I had eevr seen in a game. Normal "shooters" were vertically or horizontally scrolling - not diagonally. Not just eye-candy but requiring you to adjust height levels throughout the game, making it feel way more challenging. I don't think there was a game before Zaxxon that had this kind of design, right?

Did you know that Simon the Sorcerer (1993) was born out of a failed licensing agreement between Terry Pratchett (Discworld) and Adventure Soft? Prior to working on Simon the Sorcerer, Adventure Soft was mostly known for their horror-themed games, such as Elvira or Waxworks (under the Horror Soft label). The idea to move towards more family friendly games was mostly motivated by the huge popularity of games such as Monkey Island and Legend of Kyrandia. Simon the Sorcerer had a very vibrant style, with bold colors and beautiful pixel art. Every graphic was first hand-drawn on paper, then scanned, and manually colored in the final step. In typical point and click adventure style, you navigate Simon through almost 50 of these hand-drawn screens, solving puzzles by collecting and using items, and talking to other characters, looking for clues. Pretty much all adventure games from that era followed the same script, and that was fine. Adventure Soft obviously never had the same marketing power as LucasArts or Sierra, but Simon the Sorcerer still managed to sell over half a million units, which made the game highly profitable for a small family owned game studio from the UK and became their biggest hit ever.

If you look back at games that are 30+ years old, the vast majority has aged quite visibly. Whether we are talking about gameplay or graphics, you can often tell they're way beyond their peak. And then there is that rare and small category of magnificent games that age gracefully. One such game is Civilization II. Created and published by MicroProse 30 years ago, it has lost very little of its charm. When I first played the original Civilization in 1991, I thought I’d never see a better strategy game. Then Civilization II arrived and raised the bar dramatically. Better graphics, improved diplomacy, superior units (goodbye Phalanx vs. Battleship trauma), more tech choices, deeper gameplay - just what fans of the original had hoped for. It kept the core principles while making the rest around it better. And that's also what makes this game almost timeless - the original idea and concept is still brilliant, and I take an educated guess and say even another 30 years from now there will still be people playing this classic. While the original Civ holds a higher nostalgic value in my heart, the sequel Civ II was a nerd-dream come true. Still playing it now, 30 years after its release...

There's nothing better like a good old menu in the game, right? The Dragon roar effect is done very well, btw. Stronghold Legends (2006, Windows)

GO PENGUIN prototype for MSX by André Silva.🇧🇷 For default MSX1, another very promising, colorful, smooth scrolling game project written in Z80 assembly language. Not sure about its current status, this is a preview that was around many years ago. Its tileset and enemies have nice color and detail, taking into account the smooth scrolling trick.

Weird Dreams for the Amiga (Rainbird/1989). Does justice to its name. Self explanatory (player on operating table slipping into the dream world). Movement is stiff and difficult to convey the helpless feeling of a real nightmare. Unique, with visuals inspired by Salvador Dalí paintings alongside Terry Gilliam’s animations for Monty Python. Also confusing and hard to control, but compelling nevertheless.
