Every illustration from the Japanese MSX manuals of Gradius (グラディウス), Gradius 2 (グラディウス2), Gopher's Ambition Episode II (ゴーファーの野望EPISODEII), and Salamander (沙羅曼蛇). Beautiful artwork! #MSX #Konami #shmup #gradius #nemesis #salamander #lifeforce

This was actually the very first game I owned on the MSX. Since it was incredibly popular in arcades at the time, it was an easy choice for me. The best part of the game was the mechanic where your ship could be captured by an enemy and then rescued, allowing it to combine into a more powerful fighter. It may look simple and outdated by today’s standards, but back then it was a hugely popular classic. The second setup, an MSX2 with a color monitor, was quite expensive at the time, so very few kids actually had one. In contrast, MSX1 computers were commonly found in school computer labs and private computer academies. Some of us would even sneak game cartridges into class and play them when the teacher wasn’t looking. 🤣🎮

Commodore announces a digital detox phone and the comments seem very negative. I thought only the #MSX scene was that grumpy! 😅 I love the idea of a less-online focused device. It looks on-brand and fittingly nostalgic for Commodore. The pricing may limit its appeal, though.

@BetaRaddish Would be nice if it could be reviewed somewhere before pre ordering. Seem to be too many unknowns for now.

@bitsofbas I wonder what the sensor will be under. I can’t imagine it’s glass given the rest of the body. Or it might be… The more I research the more I think what’s going on.

@BetaRaddish And I did notice it says something like "retro camera" on the menus. That's not promising. But still curious to see reviews of this thing!

@alamone I _think_ that's what they aiming for: Rather than going with a dumb phone, something that's still useful enough in today's world. But not having you distracted by social media stuff. Will be curious to see the reviews on this thing. It might be very good. Or it might be shit.

@bitsofbas Also, like it or not, you need to use apps on a smartphone to function in modern society... so a normal person is going to have to carry a real smartphone and this thing... which kinda defeats the point...

@BetaRaddish Maybe that's why they say that Whatsapp, Telegram, etc. work on the phone. Probably not sure enough to say it's got full compatibility. Ah, interesting re license! That could be part of that elevated pricing.

@bitsofbas I’ve just been looking at the OS documentation and the android emulation layer needs a purchased license to work. I wonder if that comes port of it of if you need to buy that separate. Also the 99% android compatibility claim is a little… dubious.

@alamone Yeah, the pricing is the dealbreaker. At least for me it is. As for the big reveal thing... that's marketing for you. They weren't going to say: "we've got something new coming up. You're not going to like it though." 😅

@bitsofbas Honestly can you blame them? They hyped up some big reveal and everyone wants a FPGA Amiga. Instead they release... this thing... and want iPhone prices for it.

@BetaRaddish In a way, any retro computer is also a kind of digital detox product. I understand their thinking. But it's going to be a hard sell, between price and panicked comments about people not wanting to lose access to their FB 😅 It's just one more product. There will be more!

BetaRadish - kicked Dozy into the water
@bitsofbas Who knows what they could have done. That’s the point. But it’s seems they gone from FPGA device to “digital detox,” phone with a hefty premium. Happy to be proven wrong but man that’s a tall order. And even people outside the fan community are scratching their heads.

@BetaRaddish True. It's a risk for sure! Then again, what else can they do? They apparently don't have the Amiga license. So then.. Joysticks? Monitors? Not sure there's many options left but to try something totally different.

BetaRadish - kicked Dozy into the water
@bitsofbas I’m not gonna ho into the Commodore lore as that’s a whole different beast 🤣. But my honest thought is I don’t think it’ll be pulled off. They tapped into a market with commodore fans but to sell a phone… I think it’s a long shit with a hell of a margin to go wrong.

@BetaRaddish Dunno, I'm not in the C= scene, but it seems like a well designed project. Not just "slapping stickers" on a Temu phone. They can only do so many C64 remakes before having to expand. A digital detox phone seems like a good candidate to me! It might just get traction. Who knows?

@bitsofbas To be honest I struggle to see how this project is even viable. They’ve not long had the C64 remake out and then they’ve thrown what I considered a vanity project in to the mix. It just seems a crazy prospect.

@virtuallyfun @gordoslair That's not realistic. A custom device between dumb and smart for a small market, that's not going to be possible for 30 of any kind of dollar. The current pricing is probably quite fair, but just too expensive/not worth it for me. All depends on performance etc though. We'll see.

@EngagesBrain I was actually considering getting one (and I'm not even a Commodore fan) until I saw the price. And I'm not saying it's overpriced. Heck, making a new phone from scratch must cost a fortune, especially for a limited audience! But it's just more money than I can justify for this.
