Steelworkers and local Sports Clubs have come out in huge numbers in Port Talbot this morning. It’s clear that @unitetheunion and the people of Port Talbot are united together in the fight to #SaveUKSteel. We need action, we need the workers plan for steel. #SaveOurSteel

Labour backs our fantastic steelworkers. We cannot allow Britain to lose the ability to make primary steel. Decarbonisation must never mean deindustrialisation. The drive for green steel must mean more jobs, not fewer.

Steel is key to the UK’s economic future. There is real anxiety and uncertainty following yesterday’s events. Steel communities deserve certainty and a just transition for their future. I will continue to make that case and stand ready to work with all stakeholders to do so.

Labour is ambitious for our steel industry. Today, at Tata Steel, I set out our plan to get Britain building. We will drive up the demand for steel, preserve jobs and create a generation of new ones too.
