The Supreme Court just ruled that a racial gerrymandering claim must include intentional discrimination. Tennessee Republicans have immediately responded by stopping early voting in order to split apart the only majority black district in the state. What more do you need to show intentional discrimination? This is Jim Crow 2.0 and cannot stand.

Donald Trump and MAGA states are rigging our elections and silencing voters. This November, we WILL stop them. Everything is on the line.

Two Black Tennessee lawmakers were physically escorted out of chambers this week while Republicans quietly held a hearing to approve gerrymandered maps that would eliminate the state's only majority-Black congressional district. No referendum. No special election. No public vote.

In 2018, North Carolina held an election using congressional maps that had already been ruled unconstitutional. The winners were seated anyway. In 2022, Ohio did the same thing. Georgia and Alabama moved forward with racist maps in 2022 that violated the Voting Rights Act. The winners of those elections were seated anyway. When it’s Republicans disenfranchising Black voters and Democrats, illegal maps are suddenly good enough to keep in place during the election. None of those states even put their maps up for approval by the public like Virginia did. Virginia should proceed with their election under the map their voters just enacted. Anything less would establish an unfair precedent.

I saw this video on Viola Davis' instagram this morning and everyone needs to see it. The gutting of the VRA is the most significant attack on ALL civil rights in America in my lifetime, and after they already came for the women.. We better wake the fuck up. None of us is safe:

Abigail you just seen what the state of Virginia Supreme Court just did! You can’t play the nice game or cordial and expect democracy to survive! Times are different and you are now in a different role than you were in Congress. You must step up and meet the moment by making bold choices! The people put you in office for a reason. The people voted for new maps and the court turned the people down! The people can keep voting but in the end, leaders must step outside their comfort zone if they see the people voices are being silenced. That means, you and other leaders have to be prepared to step up and do the remaining lifting of saving democracy!

More than three million Virginians cast their ballots in Virginia’s redistricting referendum, and the majority of Virginia voters voted to push back against a President who said he is ‘entitled’ to more Republican seats in Congress with a temporary and responsive referendum. They made their voices heard. I am disappointed by the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling, but my focus as Governor will be on ensuring that all voters have the information necessary to make their voices heard this November in the midterm elections because in those elections we — the voters — will have the final say.
