۱۹۴۸ء میں جب اے حمید پہلی مرتبہ ٹی ہاؤس میں نمودار ہوا تھا تو بالکل نہیں لگا تھا کہ وہ اکھاڑے سے بھاگ کر اور اپنے پہلوان باپ کی مار کھا کر یہاں آیا ہے۔ اس کی چال ڈھال چغلی کھا رہی تھی کہ یہ کوئی رومانٹک روح ہے جو بھٹک کر یہاں آ نکلی ہے۔ انہی دنوں اس کا ایک افسانہ شائع ہوا۔ اس کا عنوان تھا ’منزل منزل‘۔ یہ اردو افسانے کی دنیا میں اس کا پہلا قدم تھا۔ اس افسانے سے بھی یہی غمازی ہوتی تھی کہ یہ نوخیز رومانی مزاج لے کر افسانے میں نمودار ہوا ہے۔
اس اکھاڑے کا نقشہ کھینچتے ہوئے اے حمید نے ان امرودوں کے پیڑوں کو بہت یاد رکھا جو اس اکھاڑے کے ارد گرد کھڑے تھے اور میٹھے امرودوں سے لدے ہوئے تھے۔ ہم نے پوچھا کہ پھروہاں سے بھاگ کیوں آئے۔ کہنے لگا کہ یار میرا باپ مجھے مارتا بہت تھا اور بہت ڈنڈ بیٹھک کراتا تھا۔ بس میں بھاگ کھڑا ہوا۔
بھاگ کر وہ کہاں کہاں گیا کلکتہ، بمبئی، رنگون، کلکتہ، بنگال کا جادو، کانسی کی گڑیاں، مٹکیاں، ایک دیوداسی سانولی سلونی۔ اے حمید نے اس کا عجیب نقشہ کھینچا۔ پھر ٹھنڈا سانس بھر کر کہا کہ ’’وہ ایسی نظروں سے اوجھل ہوئی کہ پھر نظر ہی نہیں آئی۔‘‘
اے حمید کس خمیر کا بنا تھا اور آنکھوں میں کس قسم کے خواب لیے پھرتا تھا۔ مت پوچھیے کہ اپراوتی ندی اور اس نوح کے جنگلوں کا ذکر کرتے ہوئے اس کا تخیل کیسے کیسے گل کھلاتا۔ پھر اس سب کچھ کا عکس اس کے افسانوں میں بھی نظر آیا۔ یہ رنگ اس کے افسانے کو لے اڑا اور پھر ترقی پسند تحریک ان دنوں اپنے عروج پر تھی۔ اس نے اس دانے کو نگینہ سمجھ کر چن لیا۔
ویسے تو اس قسم کا مزاج ترقی پسند نظریے کو وارا نہیں کھاتا۔ اس کے حساب سے تو یہ فراریت پسندی ہے مگر افراد بھی اور تحریکیں بھی تجربے سے بھی تو کچھ نہ کچھ سیکھتی ہیں۔ کرشن چندر کی مثال سے ترقی پسند تحریک نے یہ جانا کہ ایسی رومانی طبیعتیں بھی اگر تھوڑی سی حقیقت نگاری کو اپنا لیں تو تحریک کے مقاصد پورے کر سکتی ہیں اور کرشن چندر ایسا رومانیت پسند بھی گرجن کی ایک شام، ایسے رومانی افسانے لکھنے کے بعد ’ان داتا‘ جیسا افسانہ بھی لکھ سکتا ہے۔
مگرافسوس کہ اے حمید کرشن چند ر نہیں بن سکا۔بس بنتے بنتے رہ گیا۔ کرشن چندر سے اسے داد بھی کمال ملتی تھی۔ ابھی تک ہمیں اس کا یہ لکھا ہوا فقرہ یاد ہے کہ اے حمید کا افسانہ پڑھتے ہوئے لگتا ہے کہ میں زردے میں ملائی ملا کر کھا رہا ہوں۔ یہ فقرہ خود ایک رومانٹک مزاج کی چغلی کھا رہاہے۔
اے حمید کی بدقسمتی یہ تھی کہ اس نے اپنے افسانے کے دائرے سے نکل کر جس سمت میں قدم بڑھایا کامیابی نے اس کے قدم چومے۔ اس کے ابتدا کے افسانوں کے دو مجموعے اور ایک ناول’دڑبے‘۔ یہاں وہ اپنے عروج پر نظر آتا ہے۔ مگر ہوا یہ کہ جب اس نے بچوں کے لیے لکھنا شروع کیا تو وہاں اس کی بہت پذیرائی ہوئی۔ پھر اس نے چند ایسے ناول لکھے جن کے متعلق ادب کے نقادوں کے رائے کچھ بھی ہو مگر قبول عام کی سند اسے مل گئی۔

It was amassed through a ruthless syndicate of extortion, murder, kidnapping, and blatant land grabbing. You have ruined hundreds of homes by illegally seizing properties from their rightful owners. In these last couple of weeks, Pakistan has recast itself as a responsible actor on the world stage and against all odds, has managed to bring parties to the conflict on table, a diplomatic feat. However, the govt’s position remains quite paradoxical. Projecting peace abroad but acting as a tyrant at home. Salman Safdar, IK’s lawyer said this after meeting him, “Khan Sb & Wife are being kept in Torturous 'Solitary Confinement' for Almost 24 Hrs with no access to Books; TV; Family or Lawyers” We commend the govt for its diplomatic successes but this does not absolve them from the injustices that are being committed at home.

Despite setbacks, lingering tensions and minor hick-ups Iran–US negotiations are set to begin tomorrow. Israel’s actions, particularly continued strikes in Lebanon after the ceasefire, have cast doubt on Iran’s participation. However, timely pressure from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and even the US has helped prevent further escalation. Some have reached Islamabad while others on their way. Hopes now rest on the Islamabad Declaration to move things toward a lasting ceasefire.

At times, even otherwise intelligent individuals fail to grasp the importance of timing, knowing when to speak and what to say. Truly disappointing to see this post.
No individual should ever be projected above the State’s interests. No sensible political mind should think otherwise. In moments of such sensitivity, those who understand the gravity of the situation must exercise restraint rather than make ill-timed suggestions.
Today, without a doubt, the nation feels proud and stands united behind the State of Pakistan at this critical juncture. A ceasefire has been achieved, and talks are set to begin, an outcome made possible through Pakistan’s timely and effective diplomatic efforts, led by PM Shahbaz Sharif, Field Marshall General Asim Muneer and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, recognised and acknowledged by world leaders and the international community.
At this moment, nothing is more important than ensuring these talks succeed, not just for the region, but for global stability. The focus of all stakeholders should be to support and pray for the success of this mediation.
Everything else can wait. Every other issue can, and must, be addressed at an appropriate time, through political dialogue and proper legal forums.

Open letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshall Asim Munir ; Cease fire in the Iran war has brought a sense of relief around the world. We hope and pray that this ceasefire will convert into a sustainable permanent peace agreement. The role Pakistan has played in making the ceasefire possible has been admired globally. Your leadership role in Pakistans efforts to make this possible is highly commendable and appreciated. More than anything else, this ceasefire and the extremely positive reaction around the world including the global financial and commodity markets, shows the dividends that peace and stability bring. The global acclaim and the increased relevance of Pakistan is an incredible opportunity. An opportunity that we must build upon. This will require sustained focused efforts in all spheres of state and society to carry out a national reconstruction which leads us towards security and prosperity. The most vital and urgent of these efforts has to be to bring peace and stability within Pakistan. We have extreme polarization in our polity ,and a trust deficit between state and citizen which is at dangerous levels. If this is not addressed, fear is that the opportunity that has been created will be transient, and we will once again be left to rue what could have been. Without wasting any time, an initiative should be taken to create a consensus on how to move the country forward in a manner that all the key stakeholders, and most importantly the people of Pakistan believe in and endorse. The PM should announce this initiative and it should have the following core elements. 1)Release of Imran Khan and all other political prisoners 2)Initiation of a dialogue of all political parties to work out a new charter of democracy 3)An agreement on timetable for next elections and reforms, including a reconstitution of the Election Commission and a code of conduct for all political parties in this interim period, which should take place before the country holds the next election 4)An agreement on the Governance structure until these next elections are held. All the above must be done within the bounds of the constitution, recognizing that the ultimate power in the country belongs to the people of Pakistan. Pakistanis want the national leadership to rise to the occasion, above personal and even institutional interest, and truly set a new path of progress and inclusive development. I truly believe that those leaders who shall be a part of this national reconstruction agreement will have their names etched in history as the men and women, who once and for all, set Pakistan on the path the founders led by Quaide azam envisioned when the country was founded. May Allah guide you in taking decisions which are in the best interest of the people of Pakistan. Regards Asad Umar
