BREAKING: Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong and the Chicago Cubs are finalizing a long-term contract extension, sources tell ESPN. Crow-Armstrong, coming off a 30-30 season and a Gold Glove, will get a big payday as the Cubs lock up a franchise-caliber talent.

@RelaxingNews @IMAO_ That's all explained in the book, and honestly wisely left out of the movie. This could have been a very exposition heavy film, but they pretty much cut all of that out to great effect.

Missed that but my largest issue was the close to the speed of light travel all the sudden. We are not even theoretically at 10%. And the onboard computer. It couldn’t just refresh his memory on the details of the mission? lol. Especially with AI. He needed a white board and vodka.

Near the end of Project Hail Mary, I think the computer said it would take four years to get home but I thought he was over eleven light-years away. Did I miss something? Is that some relativity thing?

What does Est. Bases per Plate App (EB/PA) = 0.75 actually mean? Example Aaron Judge (2025). Each plate appearance produces 0 to 4 estimated bases: Strikeouts score 0 Walks/HBP score 1 Batted balls range from ~0-4 (using the in-game model)

@chrisreedNIU98 @Ecnerwal23 At Hot Doug's I'd get them deepfried and grilled. That was pretty amazing. But generally speaking a grilled dog is 100x the boiled dogs

@Ecnerwal23 I am with you on this one. One thing I’d add to your “Herb” dog is to grill the hotdog. Grilled hotdogs taste better. Almost anything tastes better grilled.

@Ecnerwal23 Feels like when I was growing up places had different takes on what their Chicago Dog was. Murphys on Belmont comes to mind here, but over the last 20 years everyone seems to have coalesced. We could use a bit more variety!

@edwardbrgr If you're going to reshoot the scene, why not re shoot the whole scene to avoid this nonsense?

The craziest part is I didn’t even notice the editing issue on my first watch in the theater, I only began to notice it when I rewatched it at home while preparing for the Oscars. From what I understand, the choppy editing comes from the difficulty of blending footage shot by Bryan Singer and Dexter Fletcher. When Fletcher took over after Singer was fired, this was reportedly the only scene he reshot, which likely made the transition even harder to smooth out.

Still amazed that this won Best Editing

@jc_bradbury It's very good and a good adaptation for the screen. The biggest change is that the science stuff is almost entirely stripped out. It works, but people shouldn't think this is The Martian part 2. It's a human interest story more than sci fi. Something for everyone to love.

I saw Project Hail Mary in IMAX last night. I read the book when it came out and loved it. Very few changes from the book, and it's an enjoyable film. I recommend.

We’ve been reminded about all the ties in Oscar history. What I would really like to know is how many times someone has won by just a single vote. I’m sure that’s happened multiple times. It would be so fascinating to see that list.

@TheCinesthetic Not in my theater. By this point my theater seemed ready for everything to be over and get out of there. It's visually great, but the movie was so terrible that it just lost people's good will after each scene.

@ManaByte It's great but not quite right. Most of the science stuff is stripped out. There are at least 2 scenes that aren't in the book. I like the choices made for the adaptation, but it definitely has things that were left out.

Project Hail Mary has everything from the book, plus one small addition that makes it better than the book. It’s not like The Martian where something like the rover flipping over during the journey across Mars was cut from the adaptation. Everything is there from the book and it flows great. They added one small scene that the book honestly needed but I understand how it couldn’t have worked in print with how the book was written.

Their mom left $800,000. Split equally between four kids. Simple. Clean. Done. Except: One brother had borrowed $60,000 from mom over the years. Never repaid. One sister had Power of Attorney the last 4 years and managed all the finances. One brother lived across the country and showed up once. One sister was there every single week for 6 years. "Equal" split: $200,000 each. The one who was there every week got the same as the one who showed up once. They haven't spoken since the check cleared. The $60,000 in unpaid loans? "That was a gift," he said. The sister with POA? Two siblings hired a lawyer to review every transaction. Legal bills: $90,000. Net to each sibling after legal fees: $177,500. "Equal" is a number. "Fair" is a conversation you should have while you are healthy. Hypothetical composite example. Not personalized legal or financial advice.

brick veneer is the absolute worst bc it encourages laziness. multimillion dollar bayfront development and they can't be bothered to run the brick to look like an actual arch pattern.

@AustinTunnell @UrbanCourtyard @pathfinder17m It's 100% thin brick and they've done a poor job of it too. That's atrocious. You're completely right, most people can't articulate what is off in this image, but they will absolutely feel the imbalance.

Oh man. I’ve actually never seen this. They either mitered the edges (which would be way harder than laying a normal arch) or it’s thin brick. My guess is thin brick—probably due to buildings themselves not being able to “carry the thrust” of a real arch. For stuff like this, it would be much better to just build a frame or box beam, or drop in a large lintel, to get the feel. Most people don’t consciously look at this and understand that it doesn’t actually work tectonically, but they feel it.

The Great Lakes mega-region of 60 million people has a population density similar to France. This is a ideal region to build a robust rail network, with hourly trains between cities.

@michaelgazin @carebecc The audiobook "acting" is pretty over the top and bad. Feels like Grace should exude more slacker Gen X energy and less dorky Pee Wee Herman over the top energy to every situation.
