@jen_keesmaat I'm disappointed to see you picking up this dog-whistle-y talking point, @jen_keesmaat. Do intl students deserve fairer treatment? Absolutely. But it's simply not accurate to blame them for the lack of affordable housing. Let's focus on those in power.

It’s no secret at this point that the boom in international students is part of what is fuelling our housing shortage. But the next part gets fuzzy and demands investigation - there is a complex relationship between public colleges that are taking in students, and then subcontracting the courses to for-profit entities. Some of these for-profit entities are owned abroad (India, China). And somewhere in this mix international students are getting fast-tracked for citizenship - outside of the established process. Accountability and good governance demand an immediate investigation.

This article makes the most important point last: "They are a public good operated by a private-sector company that, under investor pressure, has rapidly lost interest." We need to stop expecting moving people to be profitable and hand it back to public agencies where it belongs.

An encampment community has formed at Lamport Stadium again. This happened in spite of 2021's violent, militarized evictions, and the City's round-the-clock surveillance of parks. This development, and the City's response to it, shows just how little has changed since then.

fwiw, Innisfill did not have transit before, but the idea of getting a public agency-enabled monopoly then hiking fares is what I think we should notice here

Love CafeTO. But I would also love to see a mayoral candidate pledge PUBLIC versions of these so it's not just those who buy a coffee or meal who can sit out & enjoy the street life. Spitballing, but how about reducing fees for biz if a portion of the patio is open to anyone?
