#UKHRUL: Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), the apex body of the Tangkhul Naga tribe in Manipur, has appealed to Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh, placing three key demands. First, TNL president Sword Vashum called for the immediate reopening of National Highway-202 (Ukhrul–Imphal), which he said has remained blocked for the past two months by Kuki militants, and sought assurance of safe passage for commuters. Second, Sword Vashum urged that central security forces operate as a neutral entity, alleging that their conduct has become questionable and partisan. In this regard, TNL demanded the removal of central forces and their replacement with state security personnel. Third, TNL president called on the Government of Manipur to clearly articulate the historical context and identity of the Nagas and the Kukis in the state. According to Access Now's reports and SFLC.in's Internet Shutdowns Tracker: Manipur had the highest days of internet bans in 2023-2025, including a ~200-day statewide shutdown starting May 2023 (one of the world's longest that year). Jammu & Kashmir still leads cumulatively due to its 2019-21 552-day blackout, but recent prolonged disruptions hit Manipur hardest. India ranks #2 globally in 2024 (84 shutdowns, behind Myanmar's 85) and #2 in 2025 (65), after topping the list for 6 straight years prior. It's #1 in cumulative shutdowns since 2016 (~920 of 2,100+ worldwide). Far from just top 5.
