#TheBrideMovie was a fucking blast in all the best ways that a batshit crazy, swing for the fences, avante-garde retelling of a monster movie love story can be! Jessie Buckley delivers another brilliantly crafted and powerhouse performance as The Bride. It’s her unique smarts as an actress that turns her journey of a woman finding her own voice into an engaging unhinged ride and avoids eye rolling pretentiousness. Christian Bale delivers a surprisingly soulful and achingly charming Frankenstein’s monster who is desperate to find his idealized version of love. Their wild, primal chemistry is just perfection here. Maggie Gyllenhaal lets her artistic freak flag fly as the director of this one. She vacillates between black and white and color as she loops in references to past Frankenstein movies (and a certain author), evokes the best of the 1930s gangster movies and song and dance movies, doesn’t skimp on the gore or sexuality, and lays out a raging (jazz like) commentary about the decades of violence and erasure women have endured in our patriarchal society that would drive anybody to madness. Annette Benning is having so much fun, but is criminally underused here. And the less said about the undercooked Sarsgaard and (miscast) Penelope Cruz subplot, the better. They’re my only criticisms of the movie. Look, @thebridefilm is so out there that it’s not gonna work for everybody. BUT it totally worked for me. And if it gets its hooks in ya from the beginning then I think you’re gonna love the glorious brilliance and intoxicating madness of this broken Juliet and Romeo story. 4 out of 5 stars for me.
