Counter point is density of pro teams and fandom of those teams. Other than the cowboys I can’t think of southern pro teams where fans are heavily invested.
I’ve lived half my life in the south. The Midwest strikes probably the best balance between pro, college and hs (think Ohio). South is heavy college / HS. Northeast is heavily pro.

@BranchFl0ridian yeah but its popularity has been largely in the south for a long time. the highschool and college game just doesn't matter in the north as much as the south. culturally it has become southern. really that'll be true of almost any sport in the US just because population density
