@RemoteHusband @john_ford77 @THemingford So if you receive a discount its okay, but if you don't its not fair?
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford No - I think thresholds would end up in a parallel position to income tax with a form of ‘fiscal drag’. Many European tourist attractions have dual pricing for tourists (non EU) and EU/locals. Maybe something like that would allow a reduced price for locals and allow discounts
English

@RemoteHusband @john_ford77 @THemingford So would you suggest charging people who earn more than the average to pay more to enter? How does this work what's the threshold?
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford No, I know what I’m arguing. You’ve moved the argument from entitled to a day out, to food discounts to business losing money, to the value of UC. My argument has always been attractions are not affordable for those not on UC and I have tried to give examples of why that might be
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford As we’re discussing, I think the model used (and I’m just talking about attractions now and no issue with discount principle) is based on assuming certain level of income is considered ‘good’ but what is considered theoretically good is no longer good in reality.
English

@RemoteHusband @john_ford77 @THemingford Id rather have discount for Iceland than the tower of london 👌 but point is businesses make decisions that suit them so why you complaining. Why do pensioners need a weekly discount at b&q?
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford Comparing discounts for ‘needs’ such as food to ‘wants’ such as a day out is disingenuous.
English

@RemoteHusband @john_ford77 @THemingford Has to be a cut off point of somewhere and surely people on benefits earn less than people working.. This discount has been available for years now, its only just became a problem because the media told you its a problem 👍 imagine having a job but being jealous of benefits
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford The maths is technically correct? Even AI says you’d need significantly higher than average earnings to make a £100 day out feel affordable 🤣 Anyway this is an issue to be taken up with attractions if they want more ‘local’ footfall
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford The media highlighted it. And now it looks like people are saying it’s a problem. But this is an issue with attractions who if they want to attract more visitors maybe need to look at three tier pricing, with a local cost as well as UC?

@anaboultertv @bphillipsonMP And for all the people saying it had nothing to do with Labour and the school was losing millions, this is what I've found. This is on Labour.

English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford And again playing devils advocate, those that aren’t on UC (and aren’t super rich) can’t afford to go at the current price. So loss of visitors is still happening, it’s just who can’t afford to go 🤷♀️. Must be a better way somehow that means everyone can take kids out.
English

@RemoteHusband @john_ford77 @THemingford But then loss of visitors would mean having to charge more or closing 🙄 if i take my 3 kids out to that attraction they will all want feeding, all want souvenirs so not exactly a cheap day out just a bit cheaper so i can actually take them 👌
English

@SingleDadTravel @john_ford77 @THemingford Ok let’s play devils advocate - attractions need to bring in £X income per day which equates to £Y cost per person. What sees to be happening is those on UC pay less than £Y and those not on UC pay more than £Y to make it up. So yes, only having to pay £Y would make a difference.
English

@john_ford77 @THemingford So why complain? Would me either paying more or not being able to afford to take my family out improve your quality of living?

@anaboultertv @GuyEmma68700 It’s identity politics & victim mentality creeping ever increasingly into our education system. 🙄
It’s not about what you CAN do for yourself these days, it’s about exactly how you’re being uniquely oppressed & who you can blame.
Like a USP, but with martyrdom.

There is only 1 school in the top 80 schools getting into Oxbridge in Yorkshire. It is a state sixth form college. Yet there are 50 independent schools in Yorkshire that dont feature on this list. Going to an excellent state school in London or the south east is more likely to get you into Oxbridge, and yet they punish parents for trying to give children a good education that is not as readily available as there is on offer in the south. The policy should be abolished asap. It is wrong.

@apes147 @TiceRichard Me? Envious of what? You’re the one who came out of the box shouting about how it’s tough for people who can’t afford petrol and saying it’s just tough titties for anyone that can afford education when their school closes
English

@RemoteHusband @TiceRichard Oh, have I triggered you?
Sounds very much like you’re the envious one in this discussion.
Put that ego back its box.
English

Another big independent schools closes due to Labour’s vindictive attack with VAT and rates

There is no way of knowing how often Parliament votes against what the public actually wants. Until now.
houseofthepeople.com tracks every bill going through Parliament. You vote. We compare it to how your MP voted. The gap speaks for itself.

English

@PaffyPete @TiceRichard I suspect would need to really look at figures - a steady state declining roll may be survivable longer term, but was there a sudden change/increase in the rate of decline after NI/VAT change? The devil is in the details of the figures of all the schools that have closed.
English

@RemoteHusband @TiceRichard They can.
But falling numbers eventually take their toll. Whether that’s VAT or choice, we won’t know.
But many a school closing has blamed VAT when their roll has been in decline for years.
English

@apes147 @TiceRichard Doesn’t do envy?? So why did you bother posting?
English

@RemoteHusband @TiceRichard Really?
My kid grew up in a working class, single parent household.
They went to an ordinary secondary school but got a place at Cambridge University.
No fees. No fuss.
Our demographic doesn’t do ‘envy’ - we just get on with it.
English

@PaffyPete @TiceRichard A charity can survive for a long time on very slim operating margins (even consistent deficit) but increase the cost (NI) and decrease the demand (VAT) there are no profits to fall back on.
English

@RemoteHusband @TiceRichard But you can. It’s a business that runs on a funding model that needs to break at least even.
If it doesn’t, it eventually folds.
English

@Helen_Barnard The right to have a day out?? There are plenty of free days out that people not on UC have to do as they can’t afford the cost of attractions. Why can we not expect people on UC to live within their income too? Benefits were only ever meant to be temporary solution to a crisis
English

5 in 6 people on Universal Credit can’t afford essentials because incomes are so low. Many face hunger.
Any day out is far out of reach. Even the costs below, and the bus fare to get there will be too much for many.
But all families should have an occasional day out together.

Is this fair?
