We say “Achilles’ heel” today to mean a small weakness in an otherwise strong person or thing. But in Greek mythology it came from a hero whose body was almost invisible except for one spot, his heel.
Walk with me:
Achilles was the son of Peleus, a mortal king, and Thetis, a sea goddess.A prophecy said he would either live a long, quiet life or die young but achieve eternal glory.
Thetis tried to protect her son by dipping him into the River Styx, the mystical river of the Underworld, which made him invulnerable. But she held him by the heel, the waters never touched that part of his body.
As a young man, Achilles joined the Greeks in the Trojan War. He became their strongest warrior, nearly unbeatable in battle.
However, one day during the war, Achilles was struck by an arrow shot and the arrow hit the one vulnerable spot, his heel.
Achilles died, and his name became legendary.
