THOUGHTS ON 3 BALL STEALS 1) As a base runner treat the 3 ball steal as a hit & run. You CANNOT get picked. 2) If it’s not a ball or if it is not hit, good chance you will be thrown out. 3) Roll your head to pick up contact to avoid being deked by the middle infielders(Somewhere between 1st & 3rd step) 4) Careful not to come off the base on your slide. Even on ball 4 if you over slide you are out. 5) Give the hitter steal verses giving him hit & run. On 3 ball hit & runs, hitters occasionally lose the count & swing at ball four. 6) This is basically a run & hit w/o a + jump at 1B. Our hope is the hitter gets a good pitch to hit & is able to drive the ball in the gap or walk if it is a ball.

@jmosoff82 @BleacherNation So he would have been out on the initial tag ? 😂 There is no ambiguity whatsoever. It's really unbelievable how people pretend not to understand the idea he is safe the moment he touches the bag and out after he steps off and is tagged.

@BleacherNation Hot Take: Change the rule to state that if a base runner is stealing before Ball 4 is called, it's an active steal and play isn't over til ruled safe or out. Just get rid of all the ambiguity...

So technically, on any ball 4 where the runner on first is trying to steal 2nd, the defensive player should impede with the path to the base and try to get him off the base for an out. I wonder if we're going to see more of this? Personally, its weird but with ABS etc it's kinda neat I've seen something I haven't seen before and I've been watching baseball over 40 years now.

@the_dt33 @Door_County_Jim You can't imede (obstruct) with the ball. Not that it happened it didn't. He made a normal tag which didnt " get him off base" 😂 I've seen this ball four / steal dozens of times. You happened to notice because it's your team.

@Brett_A_Taylor This might be your worst post ever. Yikes. Lol. So you think a fielder obstructed with the ball in his possession? Not possible. Accept the fact PCA slid for no reason causing the chain reaction tag / overslide. ;)

On all walks, throw to a base where a runner is arriving, tag hand/foot BEFORE it arrives (since, you know, that's not obstruction apparently), mess with his trajectory, & hope it knocks him off the base as he puts his hand or foot down. Keep applying the tag, & it's a free out.

@veets23 @Brett_A_Taylor Its obstruction not interference and you can't obstruct the runner when you have the ball lol. Don't slide on ball four. Problem solved.

@Brett_A_Taylor This was exactly my gripe! He was interfered with before he had a chance to make contact with the base. He should get the base based on that alone. And, replay umps should have interpreted it that way.

In case anyone is wondering @cubs @mlb. The rule was interpreted wrong. He never slid PAST the base-he had yet to establish possession of the base.

PCA didn't want to discuss it beyond "I don't know, pretty confusing stuff" & "no comment." Counsell: "I'm sure the umpires interpret rules correctly. They don't get that stuff wrong. It's a bad rule. It's a terrible rule. I mean, I don't know what else to say. Not a good rule."
Meghan Montemurro@MegMontemurro

Craig Counsell has been ejected from game. 3rd ejection of season. Pete Crow-Armstrong was attempting to steal 2B on a pitch Busch had Ball 4 for walk & Mets challenged and won as PCA had established possession of the base then lost it when right hand came off with tag on him.

@BobNapoleon The question would be where do you draw the line if you don’t allow replay to be used for this type of play? How far off the bag can someone go? How do they measure that? Etc. etc..

The entire baseball world is talking about last evening’s PCA slide at 2b. Two separate issues here. The Rules and the Use of Replay, Umpires enforced the rule correctly. On the other hand the use of replay in this situation should be the issue that most people have complaints about and I agree with them.. Holding the tag on a sliding runner, just in case he ever so slightly comes off the bag has never been one of my favorite uses of replay. This is what most people should be upset with. The umpires just enforced a necessary rule.

@BobNapoleon @yarritsblake There is no call to be made. He gets second so there is no safe call ... and the ump missed him coming off the bag which replay fixed. Now teach Pete to peek in while stealing and you won't have this issue again. :)

@yarritsblake Valid point. I really do not think I am complaining. Just not a fan of being able to review a no call, (umpire never made a call.) To try to find the runner coming off the bag.

@MattC1143 @BobNapoleon The take away fans should focus on is not a tag where both players assumed incorrectly ... And calling it blocking is lol ridiculous btw .. but on Pete's lack of awareness and not peeking in like good base runners do and not slide unnecessarily.

@BobNapoleon Yes the umpires ruled correctly but the takeaway that fans should focus in on is defensive interference. Bichette was blocking 2nd base prior to the slide and on ball 4 an infielder shouldn't be allowed to block it.

@clintbender @bulldog1205 @MegMontemurro Why would an ump make a call on a base awarded and on a play he missed ( coming off the bag ) if he didn't come off the bag the " no call " would stand. Please don't reply my head hurts from this nonsense. Ty

@Super_Dave @bulldog1205 @MegMontemurro Both true. PCA’s bad sliding aside, It’s a dumb rule. Could CC rechallenge a Type 1 obstruction? No because base obstruction “isn’t reviewable”. Technically, obstruction could be debated. Plus, why no call from 2b ump? Because ball 4? How could a call “stand” in that situation 🤔

@Kberg43 @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN Embarrassing you keep calling for obstruction when he in fact reached the base. Placing a tag on him prior to the bag on a play both assumed was live is never going to be obstruction no matter how many times you repeat yourself. You're wrong and will always be wrong.

@Super_Dave @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN How is it not? It’s slowing down the players progression on a play that the fielder should have no impact You keep putting the blame on the runner. Runner was awarded a free base, unimpeded. The Fiedler has no right to block the player from that base

@BCB_Sara @SteveinLC I'm waiting for anyone besides myself to point out the real fail in this whole play and that's Pete's inability to peek home and find out what the hell the call was. Ball? Strike? In play? Why the hell are you sliding into second on Ball 4? Fail

@SteveinLC That's not what the call was. It was about abandoning the base. Either way, it was a dumb call that makes the game worse not better.

@Kberg43 @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN Placing a tag is not impeding 😂. But you can continue arguing with yourself. Maybe you should get a job with major league baseball teaching the umpires the obstruction rule 😂 Because clearly you know more than the combined knowledge of 4 MLB umpires last night. Haha.

@Super_Dave @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN The issue isn’t if he reached second or not. The issue is the fielder impacting his future advancement The ball is live, not dead. Runner is entitled to steal 3rd once he is granted 2nd base. Meaning any impeding of the runner prior to touching 2nd base is illegal

@Kberg43 @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN Did he reach 2nd? Yes. This play happens more often than you think. Only difference is Pete hasn't been taught how to peak in and not slide unnecessarily. Year 3 he should be better at this. Stop blaming umps for something that could have been easily avoided with better coaching

@Super_Dave @joelthemingway @chicago_sean20 @ThienemanSZN What do you think free base means? Read the rule book. Without peril, meaning runner cannot be touched or tagged before getting to the base It doesn’t matter what the players assumed. Ball 4 was called. Runner is entitled to the base and cannot be obstructed getting there
