A major UK study has revealed that the financial burden of hip fractures extends beyond hospital walls, with social care costs often matching or exceeding medical treatment.

@AllisonPearson I envy the courage of someone who can broadcast a post to 240,000 followers without pausing to check their facts first. There are lots of problems with the NHS but this post conflates hip fracture (time to operation measured in hours/days) with elective hip replacement (months).

My mum broke hip in Australia. Operation in 12 hours. Home in a week. 3 Hospital at Home staff - doctor, nurse, physio on Day 1. If she’d been in Wales: 17 hour wait for ambulance, months for hip. Countries with insurance-based systems work much better than shockingly bad NHS!

You get asked to do a therapeutic pleural tap for this patient. This is not that difficult but still very important to recognise.

Should we pause anti-coagulation to reduce the risk of delayed intracranial haemorrhage in anti-coagulated patients with head injury after a normal CT head? 'Probably not' according to data presented by Dr Patrick Oliver at #EUSEM2025 on behalf of @EMROxResearch.
