@TrueHoop I did enjoy you pointing out that sports leagues in America are socialistic while sports leagues in Europe are capitalistic. It is a great irony. As @AndrewBrandt likes to say about the NFL, "socialize costs, privatize profits."

@TrueHoop fun fact: your article from 2011 mentions the word "draft" exactly zero times

@TrueHoop Can you link me to those economic papers? I am interested in their research/findings. "Big cap space" hasn't existed widely in the NBA since Summer 2016 so it's difficult to picture your scenario. If BKN offers $30M/yr and MEM offers $30M/yr, majority of players will pick BKN.

@UncleEric Do you know that economists find the draft does nothing for competitive balance? And I can't even imagine how that would be true. There's still a cap. Most of the next LeBrons will go to teams with big cap space, and those won't be contenders.

@TiWindisch volume/variance --> if you played 1 game per season, half of the league would have a 100% winning percentage and half would have a 0% winning percentage. as volume of games grows, winning percentages should stack toward the middle. The best teams in MLB win ~60% of their games

The 5 worst NBA teams have a winning percentage of sub 30%. The NFL had 7 such teams last season. Did it dominate NFL coverage like tanking is for NBA? Nope! Because the NFL knows how to market the good stories and ignore the bad whereas the NBA often seems to do the opposite.

HUGE tank watch night Bucks at Blazers. Bucks 6 Ls ahead of POR with a loss firming floor of 11. Go Jrue. Bulls at Sixers. Bucks/Bulls tied in record. Embiid maybe back, PG back, but Maxey still out. Go Bulls. Nets at Warriors. GSW 4 Ls behind Bucks in tank standings. Go Dubs.

@Onedutch69 @M_Hansen13 During the April 7/8 qualifying offer period, I believe most players will resign with their current/expansion teams and lock in a fresh contract rather than risk going to free agency where the dollars may already be spent. I could be wrong, but that’s my guess on how this works.

I still don’t understand why they have five days free expansion draft when 99% of every player that you’re drafting is a free agent and even if you draft them, they don’t have to play for your team. They’re every single free agent is gonna wanna shop around for the best possible deal unless they’re a team friendly player who’s not all about the money?

With a new CBA is agreed upon, a lot will happen in the coming weeks: -Expansion Draft will be between April 1-6 -Qualifying offers can be made April 7-8 -Free agency negotiation period is April 9-11 -Free Agency signing period is April 12-18 Then, training camps begin April 18

@cjcj042 @Pat_Thorman I was commenting on Mr Thorman’s hypothetical where they could have done this even if Maxx was healthy. He seemed to indicate that there’s no rule stopping teams from conducting nasty trickery. In a league full of cutthroats, this “tactic” could be leveraged with little downside.

@UncleEric @Pat_Thorman Hendrickson wasn’t a backup plan. their goal all offseason was to pair them together. the Ravens were not comfortable with Maxx’s physical and they are in much worse shape without him. so I’m not too sure this will be a popular “tactic” (?) moving forward

@cjcj042 Even if he was healthy, it would be nasty business, but the (weird) rules allow for it. We can wish the league was more upstanding and respectful, but the fact is it isn't remotely close.

@nathanmarzion Am I the irrational one for being mad about Bucks fans being so supportive of KPJ the strangler? Get him off the team. It sucks rooting for him.

@TiWindisch I snickered when you off-handedly said “maybe (KPJ) wouldn’t want to play on a brand new team in Seattle that’s probably going to be terrible.” KPJ is from Seattle. Pretty sure he’d love that.

@NekiasNBA Can Paige and the Wings contend for a WNBA title *this* season? She looks amazing in Unrivaled, and they have the #1 pick. Can she recruit 2 or 3 high-level starters to join her and make a title run in her 2nd season?

@sam_amick @TheAthletic This is not "complicated." The pick-swap with the Pelicans makes the decision easy: let Giannis play and let him try to win. The #1 question that no one in the national media is asking: why is Doc still coaching this team when multiple players openly ask "what are we doing?"

How serious were the Bucks about trading Giannis? One of the teams that tried very hard to get him told me they were never told what it would take to get him which made them feel Milwaukee wasn’t ready to trade him at all before the deadline

@TiWindisch exactly -- why did we have to take back Nigel Hayes? Richardson + their 2026 2RP for Anthony + Coffey would have still gotten PHX under the tax

Coffey and Anthony were two rare Bucks actually with expiring contracts (no player option). Real waste if Milwaukee isn’t getting picks to send them to Phoenix and get Suns below tax line.
