@robboroberts @EllieChowns We could as farmers store more water and reduce P applications by unlocking the biological component of soils. Providing the ‘public’ with benefits which should be ultimately be rewarded on a farm scale, that’s my hope/wish!

It’s the % figures that get me Ben. 40% pollution is agriculture according to this, Leigh Day claim 70%. Seems like % figures are just a sound bite. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Let’s hope some better natural resource management can run alongside the farming practices. Dam water being released every day this week but we’ll be dry come August.

There is huge local effort in North Herefordshire to tackle agricultural pollution in the Wye & Lugg - but we need proper government support for the solutions local people want: farmer-led landscape recovery projects; more funding and teeth for the EA, and a WPZ for the Wye.

@robboroberts @EllieChowns Perhaps it’s always been pretty bad? My father lost inches and in places feet of soil to the river. If nothing else this could drive better farming practices in the Wye valley?

@JamesMelville Royalties are payable for 25 years, considering the lack of development over those 25 years in terms of the yield plateaux, you can use those seeds and see no detrimental effect on yield.

He’s right. The monopolistic corporatisation of food has massively diminished family farms and also led to an ultra processed foods culture in society. The UK has the highest level of ultra processed food consumption in Europe, Listen to this…

@_RobbieMoore @VictoriaAtkins Most urgent: SFI relaunch to throw a lifeline to the thousands of small family farms that missed out due to the sudden closure. (you won’t have heard this from all the affluent, well connected larger farmer lobbyists, who’s agents secured their SFI agreements in time)

With immediate cashflow pressures, farm business confidence at a record low and crucial investment being pulled - our country is facing a food and farming emergency as a result of Labour’s choices. Today, we held an Emergency Summit bringing together farmers and growers to discuss a way forward to urge this Labour government to urgently change course, provide clarity and ensure food security is at the heart of government delivery.

My position, to be clear: Drain maintenance is a good thing and can reduce flood risk. Drain maintenance would not have prevented Monmouth flooding last night.

So much for @Eluned_Morgan @WelshGovernment resilience planning for severe weather (7 Oct 2025) Every single drain was blocked & overgrown all the way up the Old Monmouth Road, Abergavenny, near my mums, a few weeks ago. Earlier yesterday the council attempted to unblock one but left all the debris behind so it got swept into the drain and blocked it again! They simply cannot be surprised by the severe flooding in Abergavenny yesterday (worst for 40 years) when they failed to undertake even the most basic mitigations. Expect the same ineptitude in health & social care winter planning in Wales too.

It’s been a difficult season to determine whether I really got the best out of the Paul-Tech soil sensor as it’s mostly been reading “Dry Stress” but there’s snippets of valuable info from temperature, fertility & moisture updates that just help to give you a steer with things.
