“Reading after a certain age diverts the mind too much from its creative pursuits. Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking, just as the man who spends too much time in the theater is tempted to be content with living vicariously instead of living his own life.” — Albert Einstein

@mattyglesias I consistently find nostalgia for the "best times" to be the decade that the nostalgic person was 10 years old, which is the peak of human existance.

There are all these “why are people nostalgic for the 90s” takes floating around this week and isn’t nostalgia just literally always focused on the period 30 years ago? In related news, I got my son to watch “Broken Arrow” and “Goldeneye” with me this weekend.

@nasqret Still prefer the vscode extension. The price is lack of realtime collaboration but being able to run code and write paper in one place is priceless. On top you can use claude simultaneously.

Among all the bells and whistles in AIxMaths, OpenAI may actually be building a tool that targets the core of scientists’ daily routine. That matters a lot: improving the routine frees more time for the breakthrough part of research. Well done!

We integrated the Codex harness into Prism (prism.openai.com) — this means you get skills, reasoning levels, and the raw tenacity of the Codex model in your LaTeX environment. Oh and we also built version mgmt into Prism, which was one of the top requests. See below thread from @vicapow for some great examples of the power of Codex inside Prism 👇

It's just that most humans don't know how to prompt these models to get something very non-generic. This is really hard most of time and teaches us that models just amplify the ideas we already have. I've made myself a lot of shitty infographics just because I focused solely on the content rather than spend a few solid tokens on the visuals.

Universities are still policing AI like it's a plagiarism problem. Meanwhile, the gap is widening. The researchers who figure out AI isn't for writing papers, know it's for accelerating research, filling knowledge gaps, handling the grunt work that blocks breakthrough thinking. They're already pulling ahead. By the time your institution finalizes its "AI detection policy," those researchers will have published twice as much, explored ideas you're still stuck researching manually, and freed up mental space for the work that actually matters. You can spend your energy hiding AI use, or you can spend it mastering AI as leverage. One of those paths leads somewhere.

This is the first time that the experiments for one of my papers will be generated almost exclusively by an AI model, instead of me doing all the coding.

Have been sleeping 4 hr per night over the last month. Finished 10 papers. Struggling to go to bed and stay sleep. Every student and collaborator seems slow and all meetings are boring. Just want to go talk to my agents.
Jason Lee@jasondeanlee

gpt is ruining my work life balance, its like having a phd student that never stops working, so then I never stop. I keep wanting to stay up for another 45 min to see if it correctly did my proof sketch or fixed the issue I found in previous message. Bedtime getting pushed later and later and weekends disappearing to prompting gpt.

Because people are pretty slow on Twitter, it might take 6 months for people to realize that 1. Codex is better than Claude Code (gpt-5.2 high v Opus) 2. OAI models are much smarter than Claude models at doing any type of work with thinking, but Anthropic models have better personality and finding shortcuts to get to the end output. --> If you want to feel like you're doing a lot of work and you're a micromanagy person, Claude Code is a good choice, but if you actually want to trust and get stuff done, Codex has been the better tool since gpt-5. I'm pretty lazy by default so CC has been very hard to use for the past 5 months but no one seems to agree. People should try Codex more because I think it deserves more attention
Tibo@thsottiaux

With the Claude Code shutdown. I am proud that we build Codex in the open with our OSS repo and we are 100% invested in supporting a flourishing ecosystem of agentic coding tools out there. You can already build on top of github.com/openai/codex/t… directly, which includes ChatGPT login and same usage as you get in codex. Reach out if you are a builder!

Everyone: Software engineering is dead Me: Just learn proper CS (read a book/paper, imo that's where ideas come from) and throw your ideas at these AI token generators. You're going to be able to dream so far and wide that you'll not know the end of it. The only bottleneck is time, money and compute atm.

@shazow Very good questions imo experienced devs have a real advantage but only if they rapidly progress through their grief cycle and adapt, now and onwards. Categorically rejecting or ignoring the new layer would be a mistake.

This is exactly the absurdity people outside academia never see. Universities love to preach academic freedom, yet behind the curtain faculty are forced to operate inside a fictional accounting universe. Every hour of their lives must be pre-assigned, billed, and certified to a specific task as if they are in a law firm filling out time sheets. You’re required to swear — literally certify in writing — that 12% of your year is devoted to Aim 2 of Grant X, 18% to Aim 1 of Grant Y, 7% to a core facility, 10% to teaching, and so on. It’s a fantasy world of percentages that never add up to reality. In practice, no one actually works this way. No scientist on earth divides their mind or their time into bureaucratic fractions of effort. It’s not how research happens. It’s not how human cognition works. It’s an accounting fiction imposed by institutions so they can harvest grant money and make their operations appear compliant. Effort reporting is a bureaucratic charade to keep money flowing, not a reflection of how science or human work actually happens.

Can your notes app do this? 1. Let you capture and structure a thought anywhere, without folders or setup. 2. Turn voice into tasks, reflections, ideas, or anything you choose. 3. Surface the right notes and connections automatically, so you don't have to search.
