Not gonna lie, I'm pretty disappointed to see American socialism get all tangled up with racialism, which means instead of using central state coordination to get growth more effectively than small-govt laissez-faire capitalism can do (and intelligent state coordination is effective! see e.g. China)--the fight is instead over how a finite pot of resources gets redistributed and the races are made to fight with each other over this redistribution. If US socialists from the Occupy Era or earlier could get over their crush on ZM for a second, and reflect on what they said they wanted back then, they'd realize that it was not this. None of the Occupy protesters were saying, "well I may be broke, but I'm white and the MEDIAN white person isn't broke, so I guess I'm doing great!"

The Iryna Zarutska mural thing shocks me. I don’t know why, particularly after the attempted assassination of Trump and the murder of Charlie Kirk, and more importantly their reactions. But it feels like a new low. I would love nothing more than for our current political madness to end, but it’s clearer every day half the country has no interest in such a thing. Perhaps the tribe is superior to the nation after all. I’m pretty sure people in the Amazon don’t deal with this level of internal division. In fact if this keeps up that’s exactly where we are headed: to our most primitive selves, and all the nastiness that implies.

I have other problems in Brazil going there for almost 40 years and living part time as well. It was perhaps the freest country in the world for years with very few laws. One could do most anything one wanted. Today between the radars and the cameras along with the corrupt courts its a huge police state. I can't drive there anymore and the nightlife stinks compared to what it was.

CITY OF SHUFFLERS - HOMELESS IN BRAZIL 🇧🇷 Brazil is very frustrating country because it’s simultaneously one of the countries with the most squandered potential in the world and, even as it is, also one of the best countries in the world. Say one of the best, maybe more correct to say it is fun as a (relatively) wealthy visiting foreigner - wouldn’t necessarily be best country to ‘be from’. For lots of reasons very difficult to dislike anyway One of must frustrating things is there are a lot of homeless people around - this is a common feature of many Brazilian cities. In Rio there could be as many as 22,500 homeless and in São Paulo it’s maybe upwards of 80,000. These numbers don’t include people who live in favelas it’s just homeless. You can have an entire city-sized population within a city living on the streets. Lots of Brazilians will consequently say to you “oh don’t go out at night you’re going to get robbed.” This is often exaggerated and I enjoy walking around after dark but the large homeless population here has effect that any time you do want to go for a walk say after about 8pm, even if you are in a wealthier area like Rio’s Zona Sul, the mostly deserted streets are dotted with these sort of haggard shufflers everywhere There is this effect where the streets suddenly get cleared out of people after dark, you know as if nightfall is the time the homeless come out of their burrows and everybody knows it so they all run back to their houses to bunker down until daybreak. “They mostly come out at night, mostly.” What happens when you walk around after this time is that every couple hundred metres there will be one of the most dishevelled homeless men you’ve seen in your life limping around, sometimes muttering to himself or rummaging through a bin and emptying its contents onto the pavement. You want to move around on the street at night you sort of have to just dodge these people, avoid them constantly. More random encounters than a JRPG. It’s close to impossible to walk through even a very nice area of a city after dark without this happening - it isn’t just a ‘downtown’ phenomenon - and I say this as someone who has been to a fair few Brazilian cities, even ‘nice’ cities like Curitiba. In Rio and São Paulo at least too I want to say there are more than there were a decade ago Know many countries have big homeless populations, it’s not unusual - but Brazil anecdotally it ‘feels’ like a lot. It ‘feels’ like much more than other comparable countries. By comparison even in a lot of African countries at night there aren’t as many visible homeless and the experience of being on the street doesn’t entail dodging potential harassment to the same degree. Again, you’re probably fine to walk around at night as a grown man in the sense of real appreciable danger but even in some otherwise nice places they really are everywhere. The moral issue of care for the homeless aside the major quality of life improvement to make is to clean up crime and then as a kind of attendant issue to reduce the number of shufflers who make it unpleasant to be outside at night
