I don't know why the President of the United States behaves this way towards his allies; after all, it's not the first time it's happened. I can only say it's a pity that he doesn't show the same determination with the enemies of the West, with the enemies of the United States, with leaders towards whom he instead proves to be much more accommodating. My friend Jamie Raskin is one of the most careful and principled people in Congress. So when he says the director of the FBI may be running a taxpayer funded slush fund, I pay attention. Here is what he found. Kash Patel directed more than $1 million in bonus payments to a small circle of agents in his inner circle and on his security detail. Some were getting nearly $8,000 every two weeks on top of salaries that were already maxed out at the federal ceiling. A number of them collected close to $40,000 over consecutive pay periods. The payments came so fast that the FBI’s bonus reserve accounts ran dry and some checks bounced. So who got the money? Agents on Patel’s so-called "director’s advisory team." That is the unit created in 2025 and described internally as a payback squad, built to dig up dirt on the law enforcement officials who investigated Trump and his allies. Raskin has given Patel until June 29 to account for every payment, every recipient, and any internal review of whether this was even legal. On June 19, 1865, African American communities in Galveston, Texas, finally learned of their freedom from slavery — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. For 161 years, Juneteenth has been a day of remembrance for the freedom that was delayed. It is also a celebration of the joy and resilience that flourished despite that delay. The contributions of African Americans, whose struggle for freedom shaped our nation, are immeasurable. Yet too many Black families continue to bear the brunt of an affordability crisis that has pushed them out of the neighborhoods and communities they've built. True freedom has a tangible impact on daily life: the ability to afford housing, earn a living wage, put food on the table, support a family, and create a future for generations to come. As we celebrate today, we must recommit ourselves to ensuring this freedom is fully realized. Happy Juneteenth, New York City.

Obama: I am not immune to anger or doubt. But I do know this when we lose faith in each other, when we stop believing that voting matters… we open the door to the most ruthless or the most careless, or the most fearful among us who see some groups and some people as more equal than others and see government as nothing more than a way to divvy up the spoils and punish enemies, and keep those who are different in their place. I do not believe that is the story of America that prevails in the end.

After probably the most embarrassing speech to try and convince the world yesterday that the US won the war with Iran, I am reminded that we once lived in a world when a president understood the importance of TRUTH. Moreover I am reminded that intellectual capacity is essential in our leaders and that dumb is NOT the new smart, no more than a lie is the truth. I listened intently to Michelle Obama’s speech a short time ago at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. It reminded me what a tour de force she is. She never mentioned Trump once, while eviscerating him for the tyranny he has imposed on the bottom 90% of Americans.
