Spouse and I pulled up to a restaurant. I saw our adult daughter’s car in the parking lot. I said “let’s pretend to not see her so she can decide if she wants to say hi or not; I’m not trying to interrupt her night.” I got out the car and she was already running at me through the parking lot screaming MAMAAAAAA *while* FaceTiming me. 🥹🥹🥰🥰

I’m pretty proud of myself because two years ago I was mortified of snakes. But I forced myself to learn lots about them as exposure therapy. And today I found a sick pet ball python dumped in the woods, and picked him up and got him to a rehabber.

Example of opportunities out there if you get off Twitter for 5 minutes. The barn where my kid rides horses runs their entire many million dollar operation with no software. Nothing for shows. No payment platform. Just text messages on a 6yr old iphone.

One of ⁦@sarcasmically⁩’s best ideas. Buy a Costco pie. Slice it and freeze it on a baking sheet. In 48 hours vacuum-seal the frozen slices. Later: 20 mins in a bowl of water and you’re good to go.

@danmall Having bought a farm in early 2025… can confirm. The “small” hobbies weren’t successfully getting my work down to 20 hours a week. But horses and land to steward? Absolutely forced to make work fit into a much smaller but equally or more lucrative box.

One of the best ways to build a business is to start new hobbies. Preferably expensive, time-consuming hobbies. I’m talking: Luge. Travel. Aviation. Antiquing. Martial arts. Alto saxophone. Equestrian sports. Community theater. Wildlife photography. Ones that you can get better at that you’ll want to spend more time doing. Why? There’s only so much you can sacrifice to do more of this hobby. You probably won’t want to give up too much friend or family time. It’s not worth giving up too much sleep. That really leaves one big thing: Work. If you can figure out how to work smarter, you can make the same amount of money (or more) while spending less and less of your time. Which means more time for hobbies. When you run your own business, you’re in full control of figuring out how to work smarter. Your customers want this. You want this. Your team wants this. The incentives are aligned. All so you can spend more time on the back nine.

When my spouse says he got me a fun gift I am scared, but not because he’s bad at gifts. It’s because I am scared of fun.
