Why are we okay with 18% of our healthcare premiums going to administrative overhead, marketing, and CEO bonuses? That’s money stripped from our nurses, our hospitals, and our families. California can—and must—do better.
Katie Porter@katieporterca

Donald Trump’s attack on our healthcare funding is a crisis, but it can also be an opportunity. If the federal government won’t protect Californians, we will build a system that does. A single-payer system that belongs to us.

MAGA is fuming after Zohran Mamdani continues to deliver on campaign promises. Despite Republicans saying it could not be done, daycare for children in New York City is now free saving families $20,000 per child per year. Turns out you can accomplish amazing things when you stop giving tax cuts to billionaires and funding endless Middle Eastern wars.

@kennydojo @newstart_2024 See you’re proving her point and you don’t even realize it. Identity politics was created by and falls squarely in the camp on the left…to include tribalism and you’re actually trying to shove that crap to the right. It’s actually laughable!

@newstart_2024 Truth? Online Right simply loves to immediately go, "what is a woman," when cornered about a terrible policy choice from Trump, etc. That's identity politics as escape route. In fact, without these identity politics the Right would be nowhere. Their governance sucks so bad.

Truth is now considered a right-wing conspiracy. That’s the chilling line from Melanie Phillips that stopped me in my tracks. She explains how we’ve reached a point where simply stating observable reality — whether it’s basic biology defining a woman or pushing back against blanket accusations that all white people are inherently bad — gets you branded as evil. Not wrong. Evil. Therefore you must be silenced, cancelled, or erased. No debate. No evidence allowed. She calls it cultural totalitarianism: a Manichean worldview where one ideology claims a monopoly on goodness, progress, and reason itself. Dissent isn’t argued with — it’s treated as a moral threat that has to be removed. The deepest irony? In an era that smugly ditched religion in the name of superior rationality, we’ve ended up rejecting reason, evidence, and open inquiry altogether. We’re so “rational” we’ve dispensed with the very tools of rationality. It doesn’t add up. Her take has me wondering how we got here — and how quickly disagreement turned into moral excommunication. Anyone else seeing this pattern play out in conversations lately? Where have you felt truth itself become off-limits?

@skiut79 @CjMfdt @donkoclock I completely agree. I think there should a civics test to be able to vote. We have one to become a citizen…but of course that would never fly.

@williacd55 @EqFundDotcom @Psyborg3of4 @ForwardCarolina Why do they need to define a resident? If a person is born in New Hampshire, they reside in New Hampshire. There is no loyalty test. That’s your opinion, not law for private citizens.

Here's the thing: if you oppose birthright citizenship, that's an opinion you're allowed to hold. It's a free country. It means you support changing the United States Constitution, which very clearly and explicitly says anyone born on American soil is a citizen. But pretending that the U.S. Constitution doesn't say that, just because you don't like it, is a silly child's game. Birthright citizenship is a foundational principle of what America is all about, and no President, no matter how ignorant or delusional, is able to change that with the stroke of a pen. That's just not how America works. 🇺🇸

@skiut79 @CjMfdt @donkoclock Congress and Senate? Sigh, Senate is part of the Congress. Also, Congress doesn’t pass amendments. They need to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. You are the problem and you probably even vote.

@CjMfdt @donkoclock You realize that that’s not in the constitution it’s an amendment. Amendments can be changed. Go to the constitution and actually read it and see what it says not the amendments.

@phillisi1174 @EqFundDotcom @Psyborg3of4 @ForwardCarolina Well, as usual, SCOTUS is going to have to provide interpretations within the amendment itself…specifically what defines a resident. Combined with having to balance that with established precedents with determines that it doesn’t pertain to certain visitors and must be loyal.

@williacd55 @EqFundDotcom @Psyborg3of4 @ForwardCarolina Clear that all persons born in the US are citizens. What part of “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and under the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…” is *unclear*?

@ForwardCarolina @Psyborg3of4 Sounds like you need to learn to read the amendment. As well as all the precedence resulting from previous decisions. It’s not as cut and dried as you want it to be.

@ForwardCarolina Actually, it’s an amendment to the constitution…and the 14th amendment says one must be a resident to be eligible. Precedents also say that individual needs to be loyal to the US. This will be an interesting decision.

@ewarren Let’s worry about constitutional requirements first. No matter how much the leftists want it to be so….the federal government was never meant to be a nanny state. Go ahead and provide it in your state and see what the taxpayers say. You’re free to do so!

@UziCryptoo Lol…if someone is to receive $3075 in SS per month, they aren’t even worried about SS. The average income needed to get that kind of payment at 67 is so high that if they don’t have $5 million in investments they screwed up big time somewhere. I donate all of my SS to charity.

By the time I am 65, over $600,000 will be paid into Social Security on my behalf. That money would have been worth $1.9 million if I had gotten a 5% return. My annual interest would be $95k. The government promises me $3,075/month at age 67, which is $37k/year. HOW IS THIS NOT THEFT??

In RFK Jr.’s first statement since becoming HHS Secretary, he applauded Trump dismantling USAID, calling it “a sinister propagator of totalitarianism and war across the globe.” His uncle, President John F. Kennedy, created USAID 64 years ago. What a disgrace to his family.

@litprof2 @grablekelly05 @JamesTate121 I have multiple degrees in math…I know how to interpret numbers from the studies I read in the medical journals. If you think the child mortality rate in the US is due to our system or the quality of medical care it provides then you are either being disingenuous or ignorant.

@williacd55 @grablekelly05 @JamesTate121 Your wife subscribing to journals doesn’t make you an expert, & data is useless if you don’t know how to interpret it. Obesity among the affluent is 1 factor but doesn’t explain why US child mortality is worse than Albania. Also, saying “People are lazy & fat” isn’t a solution.

@williacd55 @ABG_OAF @smonter42 @JessePeltan I was with USAA for 25 years. I did not fire them without cause. When I called and told them that Geico was offering me a better rate they explained that my rates contributed to a “membership”. LOL. They acknowledged that others were cheaper.
