Focus on the Family parenting manuals were treated like sacred texts. The voices of leaders such as John MacArthur and John Piper shaped what felt like the definitive perspective on theology. Ecclesial movements like Calvary Chapel, Sovereign Grace, Mars Hill, and the American megachurch model became the default template for how we “did church.” This is not unique to Canada. The same strain of Evangelicalism carried its trademarked “gospel” and its formal structures to the rest of the world through sophisticated marketing and an early mastery of emerging online platforms. In short, American Evangelicalism’s political failure has not only damaged a local religious movement, it continues to erode the broader credibility of Christianity itself.
