Next day her husband texts me: "Hey, can you give us your painter’s number? We want the same thing." I sent it. No big deal. Week later the painter calls me: "Your sister-in-law said you told her I’d do her nursery for free. She said ‘family discount, right?’" I text her: "I never said free. You have to pay her." Her: "Oh come on. You already paid her to come once. She’s already got the paint mixed for your colors. Just let her use the leftovers. Saves us $800." I said: "I paid for 20 hours of labor + custom design. That’s my nursery." Her: "But it’s just paint. You won’t use it all." I didn’t argue. I told the painter: "Bill her full price. And mix new paint." Then I locked my door on painting day. My dad called: "You embarrassed your brother. Now they can’t afford a nursery. Can’t you just let her use your painter for free? You’re doing better financially." No. You decided my paid custom mural was a group project because we’re due close together. My baby’s room isn’t her Pinterest inspo with a coupon. And somehow… I’m the one the family calls “stingy.” Apparently at pregnancy, “hiring a painter” means “buying paint for the whole family tree.” But wanting the nursery I paid for?
