A DAUGHTER WALKED INTO A HOSPITAL AND CAME OUT EXPOSING THE ENTIRE NHS
Her mother went into Stafford Hospital in 2007. She came out as a name on a memorial wall.
Julie Bailey watched her mum Bella suffer through conditions that would shock you to the bone. Patients left in soiled sheets. Buzzers ignored for hours. People dying of thirst with a tap two feet away.
So Bailey did what regulators, trust executives, and an entire government department had failed to do for years.
She turned her own cafe, Breaks, into the headquarters of a campaign called Cure the NHS @curetheNHS.
She covered the walls with photos of the dead. Faces. Names. The trust wanted numbers it could explain away. She gave them people it couldn't.
Turns out Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust had been chasing something called foundation status. A gold star from the government for hitting targets while patients lay in their own waste.
The trust banked a surplus. Families banked grief.
The fallout was almost too big to summarise without sounding sarcastic.
NHS chief executive Sir David Nicholson resigned. The Francis inquiry landed in 2013 with 290 recommendations.
Jeremy Hunt @Jeremy_Hunt called it a systemic failure across the NHS and the Department of Health, which is a encrypted way of saying people died because a spreadsheet looked good in London.
Bailey gave evidence to the inquiry.
Bailey kept pushing after most people would have stopped.
Bailey was later named the second most powerful woman in Britain by The @Independent, which is a strange sentence to write about someone who just wanted her mum to get a glass of water.
One woman with a small cafe forced a national reckoning that an entire NHS hierarchy spent years trying to avoid.
