"doesn't matter at all" etc. etc. 'conflating general ease of use and adoption with flexible vocab/expressions' Ease of use and adaptability certainly matter, many things matter. It's not binary/dualistic. It's many factors, ease of use is def one of them or inverted, difficultly of practical use is also one of them. How many inventions come out of a language matter, Super Power status of it's users matter, many reasons. But if a language is difficult to pick up just for basic usage, it's going to have a big impact. Which is one of many reasons why difficult Asian languages don't and won't spread effectively.

I think everyone agrees Japanese and Korean is more pleasant to listen to than Chinese
