The victory of the opposition in Hungary yesterday, like the Polish election in 2023, is a victory for democracy, not just in Europe but around the world. Most of all, it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of the Hungarian people – and a reminder to all of us to keep striving for fairness, equality and the rule of law.

We asked students in Groningen a few questions about Bosnia and Herzegovina and the EU. Perspectives varied quite a bit, especially across different fields of study from politics to economics. Part of what we’re trying to do with EyeOnBiH is open up more of these conversations.

On this day in 1984, the 14th Winter Olympic Games were officially inaugurated in Bosnia’s capital Sarajevo.

Srebrenica Memorial today marked the International Holocaust Remembrance Day, paying tribute to the millions of victims of the Nazi and Ustaša regimes during the Second World War. On this occasion, they also remembered eleven people born in the municipality of Srebrenica who, according to the list of victims compiled by the Jasenovac Memorial Site Public Institution, were killed in the Jasenovac and Stara Gradiška camp system between 1941 and 1945. Born in the Municipality of Srebrenica and killed in the Jasenovac camp system were: Purković Šefko (1900, Muslim); Jovanović Drago (1936, Roma); Jovanović Neđo (1930, Roma); Dragelj Cvijeta (1900, Serb woman); Jovanović Ruža (1883, Roma woman); Jovanović Sofija (1935, Roma woman); Marinković Zora (1911, Serb woman); Popović Savo (1882, Serb); Popović Velimir (1916, Serb); Radosavljević Juga (1932, Roma woman); and Radosavljević Muta (1925, Roma woman). These names remind us that the crimes of the Holocaust and mass violence affected people of different nationalities and religious backgrounds, and that the history of persecution and dehumanization did not happen far away, but deeply impacted local communities as well. Remembering the victims remains a lasting obligation, not only as an act of respect for those who suffered, but also as a warning to contemporary society about the consequences of hatred, exclusion, and systemic violence.
