Despite 84% of the world's population residing in low- and middle-income countries, these populations are vastly underrepresented in gut microbiome research. Here, we expand the microbiome atlas of Africa through a study of 1,800 women in four countries. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We recruited ~1800 women in a population study - who generously gave samples and time - from 6 sites in 4 African countries and performed shotgun metagenomic sequencing. All individuals have rich phenotype data.

Thanks @Sistainscience and @janiecesharmell for highlighting our #AWIGen paper from Wits (@SBIMB1, @DPHRU_SA and Agincourt) and the Bhatt lab at Stanford led by @V3ed . Our DPHRU and Agincourt partners have decades of real community engagement to support us.

Community engagement is not easy and we know we have a lot to learn -- for example, what type of meaningful feedback can be given. Hopefully with collaboration from @H3Africa, @Thuls_M's African Microbiome Project and others we can build better community practices
