Latin isn't an elitist subject. All schools in England taught Latin, for hundreds of years, until the 1960s, largely using the same grammar book, until it was decided by progressives that Latin was "elitist". The public schools kept teaching Latin; the state schools didn't.

The ancestor of 'to forget' meant "to lose hold of". It was the opposite of 'to get'. Speaking of 'to get', this verb is special: it only has cognates in the Nordic languages, such as Norwegian 'å gjeta'. It was even borrowed from their Old Norse ancestor 'geta'. Here's more:

English is one of the very few Germanic languages that preserve the Germanic th-sound.
For example, 'three' is 'drei' in German, 'trije' in Frisian, and 'tre' in Swedish.
These languages used to have this th-sound as well, but they lost it long ago.
