I think travel to the Moon and Mars should be pursued because it could shake western man out of his slumber. The doomers have some pretty compelling arguments - but it was expansion that opened the western imagination which created the modern world.

Your baby is ugly. It's your baby, so naturally you love it. Friends and family will still fawn over it and never admit it is ugly. But strangers will not peek in the stroller and proclaim how cute it is. Most strangers will ignore it completely, or take a quick glance and say nothing. A few mean ones will tell you the truth, but not in any constructive way. You need people in your life who will tell you the truth. Not to badmouth your baby, but to tell you your book sucks. When you write a book, naturally you love it and are proud of it. You don't immediately see the flaws. If you can get your friends and family to read it, they will likely sugarcoat their comments because they don't want to hurt you. Or maybe they don't know how to help, because they aren't writers. Praise is like candy. We love it, but it isn't good for us. You need to seek out people who can point out the flaws in your book, and explain why. Find a crit partner, beta readers, and/or a writing group that can tell you your baby is ugly. And, more importantly, give you tips on how to make it better. That's how you learn and improve. And, naturally, this is just an analogy. All babies are beautiful. All books are not.

Project Hail Mary review: 1: Best movie I've seen in quite some time 2: I wish I vibed with the Rocky/Grace humor more. I've not read the book since 2021 but from what I remember, I felt like the bulk of the comedic lines were between Grace and Stratt, not Grace and Rocky. Grace and Rocky had a more serious friendship in the book. Movie rocky feels like he is teetering on the edge of Big Bang Theory humor at times. 3: I was bummed we didn't get to watch them nuke antarctica 4: Them leaving out relativistic explanations for Grace not aging and Rocky having extra fuel was frustrating.

“How can I get a quick start on writing a new book?” Embrace cliches. You don't have time to develop your characters or milieu, or set yourself any challenges as a writer. Getting crap on paper is your primary goal. Still, try to do a good job of writing — snappy dialogue, quirky minor characters, a compelling dilemma (to which you already know the solution). Writing better takes a little longer. Invent more deeply. Complicate your storyline. Disguise your use of commonplace tropes. Your goal was to start quickly — but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to create a positive reading experience. As for the topic? Choose a character who suffers greatly, undergoes great challenges, and doesn't die. Set her in a milieu that you know well enough to write without much research. Create a few characters who do not just exist for your convenience, but have agendas of their own. Give your main character a reason to keep going despite all dangers and risks. Give your main character a job. Even if she hates her job, we need to see her working.

I'm happy to see the alien design discourse rising back up with Project Hail Mary's release. It's a master class in how deliberately manipulative designs with equally manipulative writing like the Na'vi will never win over audience sympathy. But a sapient rock spider like Rocky or humanoid krill like Christopher Johnson from District 9 can. Because their character and the events they're written into is what draws your sympathy. Designs like the Na'vi feel fake.
