Dear Senators Heinrich and Luján, and Representatives Stansbury, Vasquez, and Leger Fernández,
As your constituents in New Mexico, we write to remind you of your sworn constitutional duty: to represent and protect the citizens of our state in the United States Congress. Your role is not merely ceremonial—it is to fight for our safety, our future, our children, and our communities so that New Mexico is not left behind while the rest of the nation advances.
Yet the evidence shows you are failing at that core responsibility.
New Mexico currently suffers the highest property crime rate in the entire United States, with theft, burglary, and motor vehicle theft far exceeding national averages. We rank second-highest in overall violent crime, with disturbingly elevated rates of rape, murder, and aggravated assault that terrorize families in Albuquerque, Las Cruces, Farmington, and across our rural counties alike. We also carry one of the nation’s persistently highest teen pregnancy rates, trapping generations in cycles of poverty and lost opportunity.
We rank dead last in education—50th out of 50 states—year after year in math, reading, graduation rates, and overall school quality. Children are being denied the basic tools they need to succeed, and this failure is not hidden; it is documented by every national report. Meanwhile, New Mexico tops or nears the top of multiple negative health indicators—high rates of obesity, diabetes, infant mortality concerns, and overall poor health outcomes that burden our hospitals, families, and taxpayers.
These are not abstract numbers. They represent real New Mexicans: women and girls living in fear, parents burying children lost to violence, teenagers dropping out or becoming parents too soon, and entire communities stuck in failing schools and declining health while you hold the federal levers of funding, policy, and oversight.
You are failing the communities you were elected to serve.
And because New Mexico is part of the United States, this failure ripples across the country. When one state is allowed to become the worst in safety, education, and opportunity, it drags down national averages, drains federal resources, and signals to every other state that neglect is acceptable. Your continued inability—or unwillingness—to deliver meaningful federal solutions for public safety grants, education reform dollars, family planning support, and health infrastructure improvements is a direct betrayal of the people of New Mexico and a disservice to the nation.
We demand better. We demand aggressive advocacy for targeted federal funding and legislation that reverses these shameful rankings. We demand accountability—not press releases, but results. New Mexico’s citizens have waited long enough.
The time for excuses is over. Represent NEW MEXICO. Protect NEW MEXICO
