@ArcadeRacing_0 @bunnytv1 @EpicGames I figure I would play my Epic one now to see if I should go double dip it on Steam before its gone but it won't let me! Out of hundreds of games I have on Epic this is the ONLY one that says "OS Unsupported"; tried on multiple W10/W11. Something screwy is going on with this!

What is going on there? That's terrible! It installs fine on Steam still, so it must be an Epic thing. Man, they are a terrible company. I'm so glad I only ever really got Epic for the free games, although I did buy Horizon Chase 2 on Epic, since it wasn't available on PC anywhere else.

RIP Horizon Chase Turbo. 💚💛💙😭🫗 It's your last chance to pick up this modern arcade racing classic on all store fronts before it's delisted & disappears on June 1st, 2026. A big thanks goes out to @EpicGames for burying a bit of arcade racing history. Eternally grateful. 🤦‍♂️

@bunnytv1 @ArcadeRacing_0 @EpicGames I just noticed this too, but I tried it on Windows 10 too with the same result. Can't download it, its in my library! Is this their way of preventing people from downloading it whatsoever? That means Epic Store is UNSAFE for ANY purchases if they can do that!

@dantemendes I was at Tengen/Atari 90'-97; being involved in this project was one of the best experiences I had in game dev. I didn't find out just how insane it was that it all happened until years later, and the far reaching positive outcomes it had for gaming - especially for stuff I love!

Gauntlet IV for Mega Drive (by M2/Tengen/1993) has a dedicated "Arcade Mode" which is essentially an excellent port of the original 1985 arcade classic. Also it has great audio in general and supports 4-player co-op through the Sega Tap adapter. And finally, a massive Quest mode.

@joelvallie @LimitedRunGames I'm not *quite* done with it yet, as I wanted to make more customized controllers/speakers for it, but otherwise its everything I wanted, and optimized to have minimal input lag and correct aspect ratio! The side art panels swing out to the front. The whole thing looks alive! :)

@joelvallie @LimitedRunGames Also got the email. I knew better but this game meant too much for me. They keep moving the goalposts on their website so they keep the lie going as long as possible to avoid admitting delays. Sickening. Never again. I built my own cabinet for it 3 months ago anyway, go figure.

@STGshmups Nothing interesting off the top of my head. Konami was meh but I loved working at BPS, there's stories there like how I was hired. If I become more active on here I'll probably blabber about more stuff. Maybe I'll start a piggybank to raise the $8/mo to ramble longer someday! XD

@g0z3r404 @tonyhawk Now one of the most blessed things I've ever had <3 I was a demo player for the game at CES 1993 at the TTI booth, their last show before going away forever. </3

In 1993 TTi was a small group of guys operating on a shoestring budget w no money from NEC to promote the Turbo Duo So they got @tonyhawk to edit an indie VHS in the style of a Powell/Peralta skateboarding video, to get word out about Turbo Duo and the new game Lords of Thunder

@RetroGamingDev @PixelCNinja Yes, it is still in dev and I'm hellbent on getting it out in the next year; I had the demo up at @GameOnExpo this past weekend! Life stuff slowed it down and then industry stuff - but overall the delay was for the best as modern hardware and tech runs it much better!

Primal Rage 2 is the legendary "lost" sequel that evolves the prehistoric brawling! Introducing human "Avatars" that can transform into the original dinosaurs, it features fluid combos, massive fatalities, and incredible claymation-style visuals.

@PixelCNinja Can you imagine how disappointing it would have been to have worked on this game? The sheer amount of work doing claymation and digital capture, then to find out the game was cancelled...

@Tailsnic_Retro Wow very nice! I attempted similar with my cabinet but could not get JAMMA video to appear perfectly and the display lag was not worth it. I ended up making a transforming bartop that minimized lag instead!

@arcadeheroes Great post with amazing insight. I love hearing how games evolve during development and the earn-or-die trial by fire of the arcade has a special element to it I think has since been lost; I wish the industry could go back to that kind of ethic. Thank you for sharing!! <3

Arcade Heroes - The Saviors of Coin-op Newsblog
Location Tests I've noticed on the RE2 Dead Shot video, that not a lot of people know how testing works in the arcade biz. So here's a quick crash course. We also call these "loctests." Arcade game devs still have alpha & beta builds that are done internally, but at some point, you need to know if the concept will actually make money on location. That is what ultimately matters for an arcade game - if it earns, it sells. If it doesn't earn, then you need to figure out why, and whether it's worth it to keep investing into the project. Even if you've done a concept before, there might be some unknowns (a new feature/gimmick, how ppl take to the IP, the cabinet, the location you're testing at, etc.). Loctests are the ultimate strainer to figure this out. Most of the time, the cabinet will change quite a bit from what's seen on test vs. production; the software will certainly change, unless it's a 'last test' kind of thing to find any last minute bugs. Top Gun: Maverick by Raw Thrills was originally going to allow you to free roam within a certain distance. But players got lost and didn't have fun. So they reworked it to fall in line with what is out there now. There are also big differences in how loctests are used in the East vs the West. In Japan, they will do "undercover" tests to just see how a game does without any fanfare, but it is also very common for companies to announce tests in advance with a certain length. These work to market the game, while also collecting data. Taito did a great job on that with Dariusburst Another Chronicle back in 2010, where we saw lines stretching around the building for ppl waiting to play. In the West though, such a thing is unheard of - they always prefer to keep the test as low key as is possible. This is because they want to see what the "organic" reaction to people playing a game is. That alone can tell you more than numbers on a page can (sometimes a dev will hang out at a location and watch ppl play from afar, but not always). [Sidenote: I do try to balance this in our coverage, as I understand that devs want the test to be as organic as is possible, but some games just start having pics shared around on Facebook/X/Reddit/etc. It's almost impossible to get away with a completely secret test these days, especially if you have a huge IP like Resident Evil or something like it. I do reach out to devs first and ask, usually preventing the name of the location from going out. I haven't been great about this in the past, but have learned to improve.] Regardless what you see from test coverage though, always keep in mind that things about it will change. Good devs use tests to gather feedback and determine what works and what doesn't. They also have to make operators (the people who may spend 10s of thousands on the game) happy. The original stick shifter on Dirty Drivin' was changed due to operator feedback (although as an op myself, I didn't agree with that and thought that the OG stick was much better for the player experience and that it could have been resolved a different way). It's also worth noting that on occasion, a game fails testing. Maybe it was something about the cabinet that couldn't be resolved, or the gameplay. When that happens enough, the game can be scrapped. This can happen to unexpected games - back in 2019, we reported about a new Tetris Dimensions arcade game being tested out in NY. Even though you'd think people would know how to play Tetris (especially a version dumbed down for ticket redemption play), people consistently didn't play it correctly, it didn't make money, and it was quietly cancelled. The same thing happened to an 8-player Asteroids game. Along those lines, this is also why we don't often get announcements on new games in development, as there are a lot of variables that could lead to a game getting axed. There's also the possibility of an innovative idea that gets copied by others who can produce faster, but that's another conversation. Either way, that tells you about loctests and hopefully provides insight as to why they are different from the console/mobile industry.

@arcadeheroes I recall a high profile one in the west: Sunnyvale Golfland's location test for Street Fighter II' Champion Ed. was NUTS, ppl were FLYING IN for that one, lines hours deep. A few yrs later I worked at Capcom Japan; we still did LocTests at the same arcade, not nearly as insane!
