It's simple. It's called compromise. If it ends a war in 8 weeks versus 20 years in Afghanistan or 8 years in Iraq with limited loss of life, who cares if it costs $300 billion and the Arab countries pay for it? It's stopping. It's putting a giant roadblock in front of Israeli expansion and it's calming the Middle East. That is the objective: to put out the fire.

What frustrates me most about social media is how eagerly people form confident opinions on the basis of incomplete information. Very few are willing to simply say, “The optics look bad, but we don’t have the full picture yet, so I’m going to hold off.” This is textbook halo and horn effect thinking: once you’ve already decided someone is either a hero or a villain, every new piece of information is filtered through that lens. Confirmation bias does the rest; people gather whatever scraps support the conclusion they’ve already reached and ignore the rest. There’s no clearer example right now than the Iran deal. We still don’t know the actual details, and we won’t until Friday. Yet the takes are already fully formed, fully confident, and fully at war with one another. You’re free to assemble an opinion from the fragments and whatever narrative fits your priors. I’m equally free not to sign on to it.
