@AnotherPattern
My job isn't to know who I am. My job is to make space for who I am.

kind of wish i werent aware of the twitter meta that punishes tweeting a lot. i dont want to let this affect my tweeting but:
- tweeting less is prob necessary for getting something closer to the feeling of older twitter
- sounds like tweeting a proper thread gets punished over using longform (fucking lame)
i think actually replying to comments gets counted towards total tweets so ofc im fucked there bc that is kind of the WHOLE FUCKING POINT but whatever

@nosilverv And they hate this lol
One of the most indignant men I have ever met was a Greek taxi driver who grumbled about population and immigration (entirely in Greek!) our whole drive from the airport 😂
This was in 2018

This is misinformation: Greece is full of people

@nosilverv never integrate, you must instead know precisely when to be fully dumbass, or instead fully genius

@AnotherPattern lmao
we call this integrating the shadow (???? [which is which??])

The therapist who counsels you to befriend your darkness has misunderstood the assignment.
The goal is not a comfortable gray; the saint and the sinner shaking hands over tea.
It is to be fully dark when darkness is called for and blazingly light when light is, holding both without flinching, knowing which is which. Integration is not the marriage of opposites. It is the mastery of when to be which.

List format until I develop an urge to discuss one more deeply:
Social media: facsimile of genuine community and being known. Delivers the shape of connection, the metrics of belonging, without the substance of actual mutual presence and care. You can have 50,000 followers and be completely alone.
Pornography: facsimile of genuine erotic intimacy. Delivers the physiological response without the vulnerability, the knowing, the risk of actual love. Efficient and empty in exactly the same way.
Therapy culture: facsimile of the healing that happens in genuine relational embeddedness. Individual optimization as substitute for the village that was supposed to hold you. You can be the most self-aware person in the room and still be utterly unmoored.
Celebrity worship: facsimile of the saint, the exemplar, the person whose life shows you what yours could be. We need models of full humanity. We get parasocial relationships with people performing curated versions of themselves.
Gyms: facsimile of meaningful physical labor. The body knows it's supposed to work. We removed the work and kept the exertion, stripped of any productive relationship to the world.
Fast food: facsimile of the feast, the communal meal, the table as sacred space. Delivers calories and flavor without the preparation, the gathering, the time that makes eating together mean something.
Travel: facsimile of genuine encounter with the other. You go somewhere, take photographs of it, and leave unchanged. Wonder packaged and consumed rather than received.
Netflix: facsimile of story as genuine initiation. Story used to do real work on you. Now it's ambient, endless, frictionless. The shape of narrative without the transformation.
Music: facsimile of participation. Every culture before modernity sang together; around fires, in fields, in worship, in grief. Skill was irrelevant. The point was presence and contribution. Now music-making is reserved for the talented and the rest of us consume. We went from participants to audience.
Video games: facsimile of meaningful agency in a world that has systematically removed it. The human animal was built to hunt, build, navigate, solve problems with immediate visible consequences. Modern life offers almost none of this. Work is abstract, impact is invisible, the environment doesn't respond to you.

The Zoo is a broken promise. We feel the pull of animals because we know they belong with us. The child pressing their face against the glass feels this truth. The cages are confessions that we don't yet know how to live this way, that the best we can offer is a simulacra

@cxgonzalez A good life heuristic: does this contribute towards playing hide and seek with my great grandchildren when I am 90 years old

I try to optimize for longevity most of the time Exercise, nutrition, general health and wellbeing are all for the explicit purpose of being able to play tag and hide and seek in my 90s
