Researchers open-sourced an AI that taught itself 300 years of physics with zero physics knowledge In 1907, Einstein had what he called his "happiest thought": gravitational mass = inertial mass. It took him 8 more years to turn that insight into General Relativity. Now, researchers at Peking University built an AI that figure out the same thing on its own with zero physics knowledge. They call it AI-Newton. They didn't train it on physics textbooks. They didn't pre-program any formulas. They just fed it raw, noisy experimental data and let it explore. The AI started defining its own concepts. First, it measured the stretch of a spring hanging from a weight. It invented the concept of "gravitational mass." Then, it measured the oscillation frequency of a bouncing spring. It invented the concept of "inertial mass." And then, entirely on its own, the AI noticed the numerical equivalence. It realized these two completely different physical measurements were fundamentally the exact same thing. It merged the concepts. It had Einstein's realization. But it didn't stop there. It systematically went on to autonomously rediscover Newton's second law, the conservation of energy, and the law of universal gravitation. We have spent decades using AI to crunch numbers for human scientists. But this is a paradigm shift. AI is formulating concepts. It is making the intuitive leaps that we thought only belonged to human genius. If an AI can rediscover the foundations of modern physics by just looking at raw data... why would openai release their next model right now? they've been claiming their next model (and current models) are as good as fable at cyber. so if they release their model while fable is offline, all attention will be on them and people will ask why their model is allowed to be used by foreign nationals. so either the model isn't as good, or fable should be public right now.

Hot take: Building software was not the best use case for Fable 5. GPT 5.5/Opus 4.8 can already write great code, reason across large codebases, and automate most of engineering. Fable 5 was in a different price tier (~2x).

Anthropic just got caught secretly downgrading users without telling them, charging full price for a lesser product, and storing every prompt for 30 days. The developer community is calling it the biggest violation of trust in AI history. Here is exactly what happened. Anthropic released Fable 5, their most powerful model. Buried inside a 319-page document was a policy most users never saw. Every prompt you send to a Mythos-class model gets stored for 30 days. No exceptions. Even enterprise customers who had signed zero data retention agreements had no choice. But the storage was not the part that broke the internet. The part that broke the internet was what Anthropic did with what they collected. They built a profile on you. They evaluated your prompts. And if they decided your research was too sensitive, they quietly switched you to a weaker model, rewrote your prompt in the background, gave you a degraded answer, and charged you full price for the product you thought you were getting. They never told you. David Sacks said it plainly on the All-In podcast. They were creating a new class of AI haves and have-nots. Anthropic would surveil you, profile you, decide whether you deserved frontier capability, and silently cut you off if they decided you did not. Ben Thompson from Stratechery asked a straightforward question about cancer risk and GLP-1s. He got kicked to a lesser model. Someone asked about mitochondria. Same result. J-Cal asked about fertilizer regulations live on the podcast to test it. Downgraded in real time. Anthropic has since walked back the part about silently downgrading users for AI research. They now say they will disclose when they downgrade you. But they are still downgrading people. The surveillance is still running. The profile is still being built. This is the company that once said it was against government surveillance. They are now doing it themselves. To their own paying customers. For their own reasons.
