@emm0sh AISC has all kinds of rules for bolt spacing, flange thickness, to ensure the friction rules apply. also material and flange prep if you want to up the friction coefficient. we've been building skyscrapers before FEA was invented so this stuff is pretty well established.

@EngineeredAf yeah at the end of the day “failure” still is super robust most likely maybe you can do stiffness analysis for slip critical and rely on the bolt shear for skookum loading

i always found it frustrating in composite beam design that, when calculating shear flow, the bolted joints don’t grant some extra “oomph” through the friction generated between the layers warning: this doesn’t apply to screws or adhesive, just bolts it could be negligible, but, i could also imagine a world in which the net friction force resisting longitudinal shear is greater than the resistive shear of the bolts themselves thinking through the extremes: if you had lubricated beams (µ ~= 0) with high preload, you still have non-composite action but if you had a µ of 1 in Ff = Nµ with that preload, the bolts would see zero shear! what does this mean? if the bolted joint is slip critical, then your composite beam acts compositely why is this useful? well, most of the time you wouldn’t rely on this design mechanism. but if you’re in a pinch and need a little extra safety factor, i could see a version of this analysis getting you there if you model the beam as a hybrid of the two modes of behavior

We spent $15,000 on billboards targeting one person: the guy controlling all the chemical spend at a saltwater disposal company in Texas. We mapped his commute and bought every billboard between his house and the oil field. When we finally called, he said "I see your billboards everywhere." That landed us our first oil field contract. At the time our entire operation was a $10,000 reactor built from PVC pipes from Home Depot, turning corn sugar into industrial chemicals. People keep trying to throw it away. It still works. That leaking reactor started a multibillion-dollar company. @ycombinator visited our plant in Houston. The original PVC reactor is still on the floor next to the Bioforge.

we’ve mostly dodged this but imagine if SpaceX had to hire “professional engineers” (this is a thing that has been largely evaded by Silicon Valley for decades) we would be grounded

In Louisiana, the Democratic hair braiding licensing bill would require 600 hours of training at a licensed cosmetology school, an annual exam, and a fee. The Republican bill would require an annual 20-question health and safety exam and a fee. Why are Democrats like this?

@faraz_r_khan It’s a filter. If you see P.E, it means they can still do basic shit like a free body diagram - you don’t have to ask if they can. I’ve met degreed ME’s who thought psi was a force. They’re not stupid, they just took non-engineering roles after uni and lost all their powers.

Everyone rushing into manufacturing right now, let me drop some wisdom... Hire this guy. Keep him on a a bit of a leash. Let him vent every now and then. Regulate his exposure to new hires. Promise you that dude will move mountains for you...

Our lasers are usually cutting acrylics but they’re good for scoring custom boxes too. We ship a part that needs a 48x9x30 box. Not too common of a size and the stock I found costs over 10% of our part cost. So we buy 4x8 sheets, cut to 77.25, use laser to score bend lines, then tape together. When I first bought the business they were manually scoring each of these bend lines with a box cutter and tape measure taking a day to get a dozen done…drew a few lines in lightburn and now this part of the process is an afterthought.

My manufacturing hot take: I don’t understand the love affair with McMaster Carr. It is indeed a great business, but for minimally more effort, you can get the same material for half the price.

This was found on the other side of a door leading to the unused upper offices. My niece made these rules for the club house when she was a little girl. She's now married, her husband is my tech guru/office lead and she manages orders and shipping at our east location. Family.

Conference room remodel update. The truck series nose comes down and we found a window behind it. I feel like I need to keep a touch of wood paneling somewhere in here but the plan is to epoxy, paint and seal the concrete. I don't want a sterile office.

Xometry vs OSH Cut. Same parts, same material. Xometry: 10 business day, $633.67, sent overseas OSH Cut: 3 business days, $177.96. Or ships tomorrow, for $322.96. Made in Utah. Xometry isn't profitable. 😕
