Is Europe undermilitarised? Yes. that’s because we’ve been effectively pacified and folded into the influence sphere of an offshore great power. Put in metaphorical terms that are easier to understand, we are semi-autonomous imperial provinces. The US brought about this state of affairs via its own martial victories. Nobody alive today, in US or Europe, had any real say in this, and neither ordinary Americans nor ordinary Europeans bear any responsibility for (or meaningful influence over) these arrangements.

It's incredibly strange that the world actually did reach an informal consensus not to fight with the real modern weapons.
It's really only one step less strange than some sci fi scenario where all humans agree to ban guns and only fight with swords or something.

@steakmajam @number_pizza111 They’re still reprinting Neal Stephenson, which is at least as “reference rich” & intertextual as Gulliver’s Travels. It’s not “hundreds of years,” yet, but I don’t have to strain my brain to see that people will be looking at Snow Crash as a major work of the age in future.

Mass culture was definitely more intellectual until the invention of the radio or WWII or thereabouts.
Just read a chapter of Gulliver's Travels dedicated to mocking Leibniz’s work in symbolic logic, and I find that alien enough that I can’t think of a workable modern analogy.

It’s starting to look like this hunch was correct and that the IRGC, in a desperate attempt to set the region on fire and rally jihadists behind them, is trying to blow up the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount. This cluster munition flew directly over Al-Aqsa and landed just 200 meters away. This shell would have destroyed the domes. This seems to be their plan. It is the only possibile reason they are repeatedly targeting the Old City of Jerusalem. There are no military targets there, and most of the population is Muslim.
