John Snow, Barry Marshall, Semmelweis, Borglum, Galileo. Imagine if we judged people by the content of their character. Prefer facts over “someone’s truth.”

Still can’t stop thinking about gummy bears every time someone brings up the Australian PM in any context. That’s some incredible guerrilla marketing for a brand most Americans only encounter at TJ Maxx in the expired impulse buy aisle.

Albanese made a big noise about going after the far-right, and 'neo nazis', after Bondi Beach massacre, and today, he almost got strung up in a Sydney Mosque. Could not make this stuff up.

A young coworker (late 20s) referred to 3 Doors Down as “Dad Rock”. They formed in 1996. I was a junior in High School.

It’s funny In Star Wars that typically whenever a member of an alien species first appears in the films, most subsequent media will proceed to portray whatever occupation they had as a major part of their species’ lore and have other members in that job There’s a joke to be made there

“What passes for hip cynical transcendence of sentiment is really some kind of fear of being really human” David Foster Wallace would have loved the post-cynical wave in pop culture lately.

It’s kind of funny to me how many artists have tried to capture the wyrd magic of Lisa Gerard’s glossolalia from “Gladiator” but can never quite steal that fire from the heavens. Truly a unique talent, when that term has become overused.

@KurtSchlichter - Nice strawman - Importing 3rd World aliens is the American model. The US promoted it with soft power, scolded the Europeans for not adopting it - Washington loves having all that defence spending go through it rather than European hands. US taxpayers may not but no one cares

@Empty_America I, for one, am grateful that that informal ban has held my entire life. Even accepting that nuclear fear porn was overblown for effect, they’re incredibly imprecise weapons that have a good chance of expensively poisoning any land they land on.

The Carmina Burana are amazing because their actual content is pretty louche, but the Carl Orff score makes them sound like battle music from a star empire. Imagine Barenaked Ladies songs done like Sardaukar chants.

@steakmajam @number_pizza111 They’re still reprinting Neal Stephenson, which is at least as “reference rich” & intertextual as Gulliver’s Travels. It’s not “hundreds of years,” yet, but I don’t have to strain my brain to see that people will be looking at Snow Crash as a major work of the age in future.

Mass culture was definitely more intellectual until the invention of the radio or WWII or thereabouts. Just read a chapter of Gulliver's Travels dedicated to mocking Leibniz’s work in symbolic logic, and I find that alien enough that I can’t think of a workable modern analogy.

@SomeBitchIIKnow It’s the PMC solution to everything. Attribute the failings of natural decline that could be fixed with responsible engineering/municipal accountability to “vast & nonspecific forces” that require more managerialism to tame (but in fact just require people to do their paid jobs.)

They’re currently blaming climate change for San Francisco sinking instead of acknowledging that the entire area sits on top of reclaimed landfill and wetlands.

The Colorado river no longer reaches the ocean and they blame climate change instead of dams and diverting irrigation systems.

@SomeBitchIIKnow Also, we don't really have a water problem, we have a wrong type of water in the wrong places problem.
