Thai shelling continued in Poipet yesterday, as an emergency ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting failed to halt the fighting. Poipet has become a focal point not only of military activity, but of competing narratives. Cambodian reporting describes civilian buildings being hit. Thai media claim some of those same buildings were being used by Cambodian forces as firing or defensive positions, including allegations that they housed snipers, anti-drone systems, or scam operations. In that framing, civilian harm is attributed to the use of human shields or militarized civilian structures. This has been the pattern throughout the December fighting. Each strike is followed by dueling explanations. Each side insists it is acting defensively. Independent verification is limited, access is constrained, and claims often circulate faster than facts.

While working at Samsung HQ in Korea, I used to travel to the US almost every month, for 9 years. Korean companies are HQ driven. They need to ensure very close alignment with the subsidiaries. Engineers at HQ need to support subsidiaries in production planning and ramp up (Many core technologies are developed at the HQ, so knowledge transfer takes time). It's not that these companies are trying to replace American jobs. The goal is usually to perform tasks that America based workforce can't do (yet). Putting myself in the shoes of detained handcuffed engineers who were simply on business trips, I believe this kind of incidents will significantly reduce the goodwill among US allies and will hamper the efforts to bring more production to the US. Whoever ordered these raids should be fired.
