Offhand — * Vacillation on masks, with abundant motivated reasoning in every case. * Promulgation of made-up thresholds with no evidentiary basis (e.g. 6 feet). * Authoritarian delight in nanny state intrusiveness (policing the beach and such). * 180 on many issues around BLM. * Lack of effective response from science funding bodies. * Denial of aerosolized transmission. * Changing of trial readouts so that they’d occur after the election. (Confirmed to me by senior OWS officials.) * Crazy criteria for vaccine distribution. * Adamant insistence on vaccine efficacy beyond what was supported by data. * Almost complete lack of follow-through on OWS (on pan-variant vaccines). I’m sure there are more, but those are the ones that stick out.

Some people aren’t just in big roles, they *are* the role. e.g. Tammy at Stripe. Solana at FF. Katherine at AD/a16z. For appropriate roles, recruit people whose natural inclinations fit your business and pitch them "be yourself, just with more support and a stronger platform."

Much of life is filled with stupid maintenance tasks like eating, cleaning, exercising, clearing your inbox, brushing your teeth, sleep hygiene. Paradoxically, your ability to actually do anything meaningful and creative relies on your ability to power through this stuff ultra-efficiently so that you actually have time for creativity. You can fill your entire day with maintenance tasks and never get to the "creating new value" part.

It's incredibly low status to have to carry your laptop around. If you were a higher status, you would be doing your work on an iPad. If you were even higher status, you'd be doing your work on an iPhone. If you're even higher status, you're using an Android tri-flip phone. If you were even higher status, you would actually just be using a watch with an SMS feature. If you were even higher status, you would just have another person with a clipboard.

There used to be a fountain at the center of the Civic Center Plaza in SF. This makes me want a new ranking of cities: ornamental fountains per capita. That is, those with the affinity for beauty to construct them, and with the social trust and dignity to sustain them.
