In a way, it feels like the Rebels blew up the "normal" manifestations of the Empire in A New Hope and so the next two movies do not have a Tarkin equivalent anymore. The demons behind the mask of "order" come to the forefront.

If you put him in a robe and a hood you'd just accept that as normal because he is the non Force sensitive equivalent of a Sith Lord. He is what Palpatine might be if he couldn't shoot lightning. He's the Empire in human form as much as Sidious, Vader and Blackhole are.

@zweiwalker89607 Question - if droids across the galaxy had "no sith language" built in then why were people just cool-cool with DARTH Vader being 2nd in command for the Emperor?

@zweiwalker89607 This is also why it's great that Andor gives us so much of Dedra, Heert, Partagaz and Krennic. They're a lot more alligned with the Tarkin type militaristic front of the Empire. Heert even kind of looks like a spin-off Tarkin. It fits the period.

@zweiwalker89607 I’m very curious what the empire was like during the OT because almost everything built up about the imperial era is about the empire before ANH

@zweiwalker89607 It is interesting to see how the next imperial in charge of a Death Star is Jerjerrod. Who is way younger than Tarkin and as shown in deleted scenes does hesitate when ordered to use the death star. Tarkin has no such hesitation

@zweiwalker89607 There's no longer a person in the room with the power and restraint necessary to tell Vader not to choke an official to death

@zweiwalker89607 The destruction of Alderaan + reveal of the Death Star basically showed the entire galaxy what exactly the empire stood for. You can't have a "normal" man like Tarkin anymore after that

@zweiwalker89607 I mean that’s kinda what both canons do but Disney version leans into it. 90% of the political plots and stuff built up in the shows and andor die with the Death Star.

@zweiwalker89607 ESB has plenty of officers working under Vader, and there's a few bits in ROTJ. If there's a difference, it's that in ANH Vader seems to be ranked below Tarkin (or at least shows deference), while in 5 and 6 Vader or the Emperor are absolutely in charge.

@zweiwalker89607 Tarkin is such a great and fascinating character. It had to be Tarkin in rogue one, because the Death Star is the physical manifestation of his philosophy. Not force but fear of force. Cushing did such a stellar job portraying him.

@zweiwalker89607 I guess the Emperor became a lot more hands on after the failure of his top brass to protect his fancy new Death Star from a single Force-sensitive pilot. Vader was also given free reign as opposed to being on Tarkin's leash.
