My Odyssey outrage (what little I had) has gone full circle. It might be so wrong it’s right, and now I’m just curious with sick fascination. Has all this twisted controversy just fueled the interest? Is this some twisted marketing ploy? Will the angered only see it three times? I remind everyone, NO ONE HAS SEEN THIS MOVIE.

@AVARY Do you speak for Greeks who are offended by the open racist behaviors by Nolan towards them? No. Why is it okay to be racist against Greeks, Roger?

@AVARY You are entitled to your opinion. I am okay with you not liking the romance movie I am in called the Night We Met. It's similar to Before Sunrise.

@AVARY I questioned the casting in general. Thinking, "really?" With that said, Nolan has been spot on with casting choices in the past. I even defend Katie Holmes for Batman Begins, who was fine for the part she was cast as in that film.

@AVARY Yes Roger, but a lot of might not go based on the woke casting. I know I won't, and I normally like Mr. Nolan's work. With all of the amazing talent out there not sure why he'd agree or choose this casting.

I do have to wonder if some of this is stunt casting for characters that will appear on screen for a total of thirty seconds. Plus, I have a feeling that some of these choices may have been mandated to bring in more audiences since the ancient myth genre hasn't played like gangbusters lately. I think the last few movies that dealt with ancient gods flopped pretty hard.

@AVARY x.com/arimovies/stat… Agree. Ppl need to remember: 1. He’s arguably the GOAT emotional drama filmmaker (“The Odyssey” extremely similar to “Interstellar”, in its “impossible journey home” Act 2 and “reunite” act 3) 2. “Hamilton” proved race doesn’t matter if execution is 🎯
Ari@AriMovies

“The Odyssey” Okay, let's talk Nolan. I don't know why everyone wants to have an opinion as to how this man casts his movies, bc in terms of playing the audiences emotions, he's the greatest director of all time and deserves respect on his name Think about it. Nolan is to emotions what Tarantino is to dialogue and action. In other words, he's the master. His ace in the hole is to achieve high emotional impact with visual cues set to music in a short period of time (3-4 min climax in Oppenheimer, crazy mid point escalation in Interstellar, etc), just as Tarantino’s is the to the same except set to action and killing instead of more emotional themes like fatherhood The endings of Interstellar and Oppenheimer hit like sledgehammers, bc he’s playing our emotions like a fiddler plays the crowd, connecting visuals and music to the bigger picture and preceding 90 minutes of drama (fatherhood, existential dread, etc) He is the GOAT of high drama My point is, it doesn't matter who the fuck he casts. They could be purple fucking people eaters from planet Neptune. He's going to get the best emotions out of them. He's going to get the best scenes out of them. He's going to make us cry and smile whether we like it or not, or he’ll just confuse the fuck out of us trying (nobody is perfect) So, let's give the man the benefit of the doubt that he's going to make us feel things we haven't felt before when we're watching the Odyssey, and hopefully we get lost in his brilliance and forget the actors skin color … remember when that was a thing? Let’s put some respect on Christopher Nolan's name

@AVARY The casting looks like nonsense, if it’s all actually true. Can’t really know what the reasons for it are until the movie is seen. Reminds me of the “Margot Robbie doesn’t have enough lines” nonsense about Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Have to see the movie.

I was already off on Nolan and this one (based on trailers) has done little to bring me back. I liked Memento, The Prestige, Batman Begins, and The Dark Knight, but Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk and Oppenheimer range from bad to meh for me. (Still haven't watched Tenet or Interstellar.) I do appreciate his love for actual film, though. And I can admit that even his misfires are well-made.

After countless attempts to do this with other well established properties, we're not willing, and they (Hollywood at large) haven't earned the benefit. Every time this identitarian perspective is utilized it comes at the detriment of the story audiences expect and prefer. At the very least, the casting decisions have removed a degree of capability to suspend disbelief here. We'll see if that's too much to overcome, even for a director of Nolan's pedigree.

I detest all things woke, but for some reason I don’t mind Lupita Nyong’o being cast as Helen. She’s interesting and her exotic looks aesthetically fit with the ancient epic. If the film doesn’t work it will be for the same reason any film fails…too many incongruous parts that don’t fit into a cohesive whole.

@AVARY This whole scenario with all the moviegoers blindly trusting Christopher Nolan with casting might just end up being the perfect analogy as to why that investment woman trusted Billy McFarland all the way up to the dumpster fire that was the Fyre Festival.

@AVARY Nolan’s cooking, he made those casting and creative choices knowing full well the media uproar that would follow. He’s subverting the genre but will deliver the most operatic beautiful epic we’ve ever seen. 🤞🏽

I’d hypothesize they didn’t necessarily plan it as such, but the outrage “virus” seems to be spreading at the proper speed to make Nolan’s Odyssey an even greater box office success than he’d otherwise reasonably expect it to be. Your coming full circle as early as mid May sounds a bit early though. Will a premature “revolution” hurt the Mid July opening weekend numbers or is the timing appropriate to ensure a historic theatrical run? Mmm 🤔

@AVARY I've liked just about every Nolan film and will likely watch this too, but the casting choices here have been baffling. Even if he is trying to conform to new Academy standards, why put these out of place actors in prominent roles? Maybe Page will work, but black Helen of Troy?
