There's nothing about "small games" that equates it to slop. A very clear recent example is PEAK which was made in 4 weeks and people love it. Spending more time on a game does NOT automatically make it better, it's all up to your skills. If you're a complete beginner, then yeah you can't make something better than "slop" even in 6 months. But if you're an experienced dev, then you can definitely make something awesome in 6 months. Case in point: A Game about Feeding a Black Hole. Made in 5 months by an experienced developer, made $500k in the first month, players love it.

@UnityCodeMonkey The whole point is to stop being so dismissive of what people want to create. If people want to build their dream game let them. If they need guidance, then coach them on chunking the game into the smaller pieces or subsystems you’re advocating for so they can achieve their goal.

@UnityCodeMonkey The real problem that no side of the argument is making: Just because you know how to use gamedev tools, doesn't mean you know how to make a game. Many small "games" are not fun, a complete waste of gamer's time (disrespectful in my opinion), which makes them absolutely "slop".

@UnityCodeMonkey I wonder who coined the term “friend slop” anyways? Was it jealous indie devs? Peak is great and a few others I’ve seen are great and have appeal. More devs need to take notes instead of bashing something because they didn’t think it deserved the success it received.

@UnityCodeMonkey The truth hurts. It makes me a little sad when this example is given. I've played through Bionic Bay and it is a well made game that the devs can be proud to have created. The market doesn't care. Steam is “Crafty Buildy Simulation Strategy Games”.

@UnityCodeMonkey See? "Small games" to you are well done and at a small scale. "Small games" to them means copy/paste brackey videos.

@UnityCodeMonkey I'm an Android developer who has worked on everything, from tiny projects to very ambitious, technically complex SaaS software and it is INSANE to me that anyone would suggest that making small games is pointless. I am currently making my first game and limiting its scope was the

@UnityCodeMonkey Making a game is one thing Making a game fun is something else entirely I’d argue there’s making a game look good in this equation as well They don’t have to look good to be fun any more than they need to take forever to build to not be slop Build something cool, that’s all!

@UnityCodeMonkey I do agree with many projects, also how small is small? with engine + the right assets, a very good flow + dedication to the project, and one might be able to create a near full game (EA) in such a time - some polish and extras. if it's a game with a bit of everything (story etc)
