In gamedev, what you can make in 6 months depends mostly on your EXPERIENCE, this is the closest thing to a SECRET that exists. Beginners might spend those 6 months to make a simple Flappy Bird clone; whereas for me with my 10+ years of experience, I can ship something as complex as Dinky Guardians which is an Automation Strategy Management game. Exact same timeframe, wildly different outcomes! The more skilled you are, the faster you work. So yup make lots of games, write tons of code, so you can gain experience which allows you in the future to build much more complex things in shorter and shorter timeframes!

Zoroarts 🦈 Paddle Paddle Paddle OUT NOW
100% agree! My first year of learning Gamedev, I developed 14 different Games from Gamejams to super Small Games made in 2-3 weeks. But This year was super important since I ended up with a really fast prototype and Development Workflow and learned to make Games with C# and Unity by developing Games in super different Genres (2d top down Shooter, 3D Racing Game with Online Multiplayer, 2D RageGame for Brackeys GameJam, 3D FPS Horror Shooter, a variety of hyper Casual Mobile Games and more). Then I spent 2 years Making my First commercial Game to learn how to Stick to the Grind and develop + release a Full Game with 6 hours of Gameplay on Steam. And now I could use all my Knowledge to develop paddle paddle paddle from idea to steam Launch in 4 months reaching 200k sold unity this month 🤯 I can now develop whatever I want and I have no real Limits skill-based but a lot of Game ideas for future projects 🙌

CheeseHead games (making retro life)
I have made a bunch of small game jam games, but every time I try to make something bigger with a timeframe of more then a month, I start struggling with scope creep, burnout, imposter syndrome, etc, and my 3 month project either get's canceled or takes years to finish (I am still yet to finish anything with a timeframe of more then a month, and my currant game that was supposed to be 3-6 months I have now been working on for 3 years) P.S. to be fair half of that is due to my hard drive failing after the first year and taking almost a whole 2nd year where I was too depressed and demoralized to start over. so it's really only been 14 months since starting over for real. and I should be done in the next 3 - 6 months (hopefully)

@UnityCodeMonkey Time is also a large factor, 6 months where you have several hours dedicated to dev a day are different to 6 months with a day job and maybe only an hour of dedicated dev time a day or on some days maybe no time at all.

Summarized into one sentence: "Don't procrastinate, just keep shipping" This hits home. I'm about 6 months into my first debut roguelite and i've realized half that time was just learning/fixing game design and balancing the data. Definitely not at the Dinky Guardians level yet, but every past day was definitely a level up for me. 🔥

@UnityCodeMonkey I built my first game in 5 years, my second game in 6 months (and counting, will probably be 8 by the time it's done)

@UnityCodeMonkey Hey CM, can you make a video about steps? I mean from zero to publish I wonder the steps about making a game. How much steps in lights or animations or vfx for example. And the whole process. It can be an illuminating content for people at the beginning of the career

^agree but there’s a bit more than just Experience lol, you just bundled experience as: - time - effort - exposure - talent - motivation I have 30 years of programming xp, but I’ve met jr devs with homebrew only that walk circles around me. There’s a lot that goes into “experience” not just living the timeline. You can absolutely lose it.

@UnityCodeMonkey Aye, experience is the key! Not only in core gamedev, but also in the things around it: time/project management (!), product management & market know-how, execution & workflows, marketing and many many more...
